Working for EPC or Automation Supplier Better for Automation Career Growth?

06/15/2013 1:07 AM

Guys,
Currently I am working in Engineering Firm (EPC) as instrument engineer designing wiring, specify instruments, control narratives and write engineering specifications but I don't do commission automation systems. Do you guys think it is more beneficial for pursuing an automation career to join Major automation supplier (Emerson, Honeywell, Yokogawa, etc..) where there I can have hands on experience commissioning automation systems? my dilemma I am afraid if I go to one these companies i would lose the aspect of understanding the process that I am automating (which is important in automation) and focusing on automation equipment (not seeing the big picture). So which is better for automation career: Engineering Firm or Automation vendor or each has advantage and disadvantages?By the way I have 6 years experience so far (1.5 years with SCADA vendor, 1 year control system integrator and 4 years with engineering firm (EPC).
Thanks,

There's another path to consider. That is working for an OEM that uses SCADA or PC/PLC control and heavy instrumentation.

Chemical process equipment or PCB fab equipment come to mind.

A better option would be to work for an operating company like Chevron,Exxon etc. as a control/instrument engineer. Here you will be exposed to all the facets of instrument engineering, piping, heat transfer, tuning etc.
