Full Steam Ahead

06/18/2013 12:01 PM

I saw a TV show recently that talked about steam engines and which visited Jay Leno's Garage, and talked to Jay about his many steam-powered engines and cars.

(For those who may not know, Jay Leno is an American comedian and long-time host of 'The Tonight Show', a late-night TV talk show. He's also an avid car enthusiast, and a has a huge collector of cars and engines of many types.)

Here's a link to a cool video about the oldest engine in his collection, a steam engine from 1832 out of a British factory.

Here's a link to some videos about his steam-powered cars.

Enjoy!

He's also filthy rich. Net worth $250,000,000.00 USD and $25,000,000.00 USD yearly salary.

I envy his ability to have a permanent staff of restorers. One of his mechanics just restored his own old Flixible Starliner bus.

He seems like a nice guy and he worked for his money. He's got some REALLY GREAT cars, too.

I'd have to say it's a good thing too since many automotive museums have closed down in the last few years because of the crappy economy. At least the cars will be preserved and enjoyed, maybe not be a large group but at least by someone who really values what they represent.

Oh, it's a large group, trust me.

Ask SE, he's been there.

As a frequent visitor to Jay's Garage, I can testify, he has a vast and amazing collection....

I still wonder why steam has not made a comeback in the automotive or generation (small) industry. It seems like it should make sense to use the heat of combustion in power generation or locomotion.

Size, weight and water are three reasons why steam isn't powering automobiles, I'd say.
