Razer Blade Pro vs. Macbook Pro 15 inch for Engineering Student

06/26/2013 1:27 PM

Hello all, I will be starting my college career in computer engineering in the fall and wanted a second opinion about what laptop to get. I have done some research and the MBP 15inch would be fine for everything i would need to do. I might have to get vmware or use bootcamp for a couple programs but i would be ok with that. On the other hand the razer blade pro would be my most wanted option for a windows based laptop. It is already sporting a haswell processor, as with the mbp i might have to do without a laptop for the first semester and wait for the refresh, and it has enough power under the hood to deal with anything i would need to run, as well as more screen space. So, my ultimately, should i go with the windows based razer blade pro since most of everything i will be using will be for windows, or go with a mbp and use virtualization/boot camp and wait for the refresh? (also if anyone knows if the razerblade pro's ram can be upgraded to 16gb thatd be great because i cant find anywhere saying that it is)

Hey there,

I would assume that the ram on the razor blade could be upgraded to 16gb. That's a simple swap and it would be really silly to cap the ram at 8gb.

Razor is new to the laptop game. Though it's a very attractive computer, I have my doubt about how it will hold up vs a mac pro. Obviously apple has been making solid computers for years now. Boot camp is pretty simple to use also.

I would go with the mac, even though I'm not the biggest mac fan, I think it's the better option.

So i should wait for the mbp refresh with haswells? I was also thinking the blade because i think it has a better gpu than the mbp 15, and also it has a kensington slot which the retina mbps did away with(oops i should have mentioned that i was talking about the retina ones) The blade has gotten a lot of great reviews, hmm idk i will definitely take your opinion into consideration, thank you

Just be wary that a lot lot of the newer laptops solder the memory right into the mobo to save room (thinner is better, amirite?), so you might get stuck with whatever the specs are when you buy it.

It should also be noted that Razer has a well known reputation of overselling their products using nothing but their name as backup. I can't speak about their laptops directly, but I'm aware of the quality of many of their headsets, mice, and keyboards. For each category, I ended up getting a different product a month later due to the shotty quality of the product itself relative to competitors of a cheaper price.

With all that said, I'd say Mac Pro (not the thin guy, those are just a mess).

Alternatively, I'm going to throw this into the ring, since Lenovo has been the number one source of laptops for RPI for quite a few years now (and for good reasons). I put mine through heck and back and it functioned for a full five years before my bad laptop tendencies caught up to it. You could use the extra dollars saved to buy some textbooks.

A final note: many colleges have a recommended laptop to each incoming class. Have you looked into this? Check with your schools helpdesk or student life representative to see what would be ideal.

Yeah their headsets are pretty shotty, but i have beat the hell out of my my razer naga mouse for over a year and a half and it still works just fine, as well as my keyboard. I have read a lof of great reviews about the blade pro and the bigger screen size/kensington slot/and haswell processor are whats drawing me in. The new retina macbook pro does have soldered memory so yeah i know what your talking about, i would probably be able to get away with 8gb if i had to, but 16gb would be more future proof you know? I have also checked into what you said and there are no laptop reqs. Ill also defnitely look into that lenevo, thanks for the great advice man

I've used crucial.com to ensure the memory upgrades I wanted to do were using compatible memory. Here's the website. You might find the memory a few bucks cheaper elsewhere, but I trust crucial.com.
