Basic Control System Elements

06/27/2013 2:36 PM

I have been asked by some of collegues, which really pushed me to think deep & deep, appearently question is so simple but as i tried to answer it make me confused & confused.

What are the basic elements of a control system???

this confused me like these.

Does the Questioner asking about loops & transmitters?

Dose Qusetionar asking genrally about control system including DCS/SCS/SIS etc.

or he asking somthing else which i am not able to explain ?

Is this person a manager, your supervisor, a trusted colleague, . . . ?

You may want to ask this questioner (who you presumably know) rather than hundreds of others (who you don't know).

Google it.

Start there, just type in the title of this post. That's, "Basic Control System Elements".

This is rather basic, don't you think?

The key word is 'basic'. It isn't about 'specific'

So the answer is.
Process sensor, error measurement/comparator, negative feedback to some sort of actuator that controls the process.
That's it...

Example:- Process:- running your bathwater.
Process sensor, your hand.
Error measurement/comparator, you say ouch or brrrr.
Feedback to hand which is the actuator and operates the correct tap to contro the process.

This poster requires only clear answers, and if you can't make it clear, leave!

"make it clear or leave it if u dont know"

The above response was in answer to this question, "how can i make sure the direction of Restriction orifice and the directin of flow are right???"

From: direction of flow and orifice??

You could be in trouble.

You are really pushing me to think deep & deep ?? I am confused & confused! If you don't even know what the question is what makes you think we can figure it out for you? Do you realize that it takes two people to communicate? If you did not understand what this individual was asking, try asking them for clarification.

You know what? There really is such a thing as a stupid question, no matter what your grade school teacher told you. Are you in grade school? A stupid question is one that is asked before you even spend any time thinking about it yourself.

If you are serious about this, here is a link to start. This is all i can bring myself to do in this ridiculous situation.

NO NO NO NO NO.
Don't ask for clarification... stop over-thinking and just answer the question.
If all else fails look up the words one at a time in a dictionary.

GA

You forgot one critical element, compare to desired result (input).

Re: Basic Control System Elements

Gannet's response, "Measure -> Compare -> Adjust", is pretty good but, unless I missed it, no one really covered all of the answer. There are two basic types of control system.

Gannet and others addressed what is called a "closed loop" control system where feedback about output error is used to modify the input and improve the output.

But there are also "open loop" control systems where the output is assumed to be correct in terms of the input - a simple potentiometer dial control of the input voltage to a DC motor would be an example of this latter type.

So a more encompassing definition is something like, "a control system is the mechanical, electrical or other system connected to a device and whose purpose is to regulate the output of the device".

I think the basic instrument/control system consist of three elements:

1.Sensor or input device

2.Signal processor

3.Receiver or output device

Hi,

Basic control system elements consists of 1. Physical Process 2. Measuring device ( Sensors) 3. Controller ( decides ) 4. Final Control device ( Influences )

From the above diagram we can understand the basic elements of Control systems.

However, we can apply the same analogy to PLC/DCS as below

1. Process - Chemical/Oil gas/Power generation etc..

2. Sensors- Input Blocks- are required to sense the physical/process variable like temperature/ pressure/ flow/ level/ corrosion etc. and convert these signals which is easily understood by the controller.. basically here we are doing signal conditioning.

Controller - PLC/DCS has the set of programs/instructions to carry out the specific task of the process which will use the inputs form signal conditioning units for its calculations and generating output and controlling the process variables.

Final Control element- Output devices- these are the devices like control valves, positioners,i-p converters, ratio controllers which controls the process variable as calculated /instructed by the controller.
