Lucas Starter Motors

06/28/2013 8:43 PM

I'm having trouble pulling the Bendix gear off the shaft. On some starters, all you have to do is compress the spring, and remove the sprng clip on the shaft and that's it. This particular unit has a nut, and despite compressing the spring, i can't get the nut undone....! It seem as though the nut isnt clear of the spring. Any ideas guys....? Thanks, Norm

Any chance it's left-handed?

Thanks mate, you were right on the money....! I should have realised, lucky I didn't turn the end off the shaft, perhaps I,m losing it. Anyway thanks again. All the best, Norm.

Deserving of many GA's. I'll start.

I looked at exploded views and got no clue from them. Was about to suggest a hidden cotter pin.

Nice job!

It's British. First thing occurred to me. Probably because they drive on the left side of the road, or more probably engineered that way because of shaft rotation, like Chryler's old lugnuts (only on the left side of the car...)

Its more to do with the direction of rotation, it should turn in normal usage so that the nut is tightened, not loosened.....

Nothing to do with which side of the pond it was made......
