Sometimes. Just depends on how frequently.

1/2 wave 5VAC might be thought of as pulsating 5VDC maybe. But AC is alternating, DC is not, so how can they be the same? That's like asking if water is the same as chicken soup.

A volt is a volt ....

DC is steady

AC is alternating from -U*squr2 to + U*sqr2 where U is the voltage (in yr case 5 volts) and at a frequency vhich is a caractaristics of the circuit ...

Au contraire,
A volt is NOT a volt, all the time, with alternating current.

Yes, it is, if you light or heat with it.

Otherwise, who knows?

A volt is a unit of measurement. It is a measure of the electromotive force. It doesn't vary. A volt is a volt.

Why don't you plug in 5 Volts AC as charger instead of 5 Volts USB DC charger provided by your Android phone manufacturer and see whether both are equal.

Yes - once or twice per cycle.

No.

What varies is the electromotive force. The unit of measurement for that force, the volt, remains constant.

Don't foret that when we say "5VAC", we are really meaning "5VAC RMS". The peak voltage / emf of each half sine wave is actually 7.07VDC

Or looked at the other way, if you are looking at a 5VDC value as the peak, the AC RMS value from that would be 3.535VAC

It is true that the magnitude of the EMF may be determined at any point in the cycle. The quantity being measured is EMF -not volts. Volts are the unit of measurement.

Suppose that it was not the custom to use the term"length" but instead the term "footage" was used. The distance between two points could be measured - say a footage of 12 feet. What is being measured is not "feet" but rather distance.

Good question. Answer is:

DC Value of 5VAC=0

AC Value of 5VDC=0

DC Value of 5VDC=5

AC Value of 5VAC=5

Does a bad answer cancel a good question?
