Add a Push-to-Talk Button to My 2-Way Radio

07/01/2013 5:31 PM

Hi everyone. I have no education in electrical engineering but have a project that I need help. Can any one help me with this?? MY PROJECT: Add a push to talk button to my 2 way radio. With my mic added to a helmet, I want to be able to use the push to talk button to activate the mic. It can be done but I cannot figure out the the wiring. MY SUPPLIES: Midland 2 way radio m101 mic (red and green wires soldered on own post) 2.5 mm plug push to talk switch (has 4 wires-red, green, black, white) 2 conductor wire WHAT IM SUPPOSED TO DO: Wire in series the push to talk with the mic which in turn gets soldered to the 2.5 plug. Sounds easy but having problem because there are 4 wires coming from the mic. The red and green were soldered on the mic (black and white didnt appeared to be connected) The push to talk has 4 wires-same colors. on the plug-the black/red were connected and the green/white were connected on the plug. I dont know how the mic (red/black) wires and PTT wires get connected to the plug. On the sleeve or ring? And which wire from the push to talk gets soldered with the mic wires? Can anybody help??

There are so many variations between different radios that you probably would be best to obtain a schematic of the radio and the mike. With this you could see how it is wired and figure out how to accomplish the modifications. If you feel that you are not skilled enough to do that ask a friend or someone else who has a moderate knowledge in electronics.

If you don't know where to turn to look for a HAM radio club or special interest group. Although many might not be familiar with circuitry I would feel confident that within the group there probably would be a guru on the subject who would be glad to help you. If you can not learn how via this avenue, they could probably make several recommendations as to who can.

Good Luck, Old Salt

Or...

You could buy this Radio Shack headset and be done with it, Catalog #: 55033029

Sorry, couldn't resist.

You could try your local sport bike motorcycle clubs. Many of them use radios like you plan to use yours. Most are very willing to help out.
