Conc. Thermal Solar Power Generator Integration with Grid

07/08/2013 11:41 PM

Dear all, i am currently doing a project on the integration of concentrated thermal solar power generator with the existing 220KV grid. I would like request for your valuable input on best practices, existing examples, reactive power, active power, storage and line parameters to monitor, and any other improvement will be highly appreciated.

Basically it's not much different then adding a STG (Steam Turbine Generator) to any grid with the exception of the highly variable output power profile. There's plenty of info on this topic on Google, especially the control algorithms for the real and reactive power output and their impact on system stability and voltage control.

Thanks RAMConsult, the variable power profile is the main issue, i got a suggestion on distributed power generation,, the control algorithms for P and Q is also what i need to study.

High voltage DC, with inverter just before it gets to the grid, right?

Wrong. Next time you see "solar thermal" think heat not electrons. Except for the mirrors and the inside-out boiler it's basically a closed loop Rankine cycle working fluid plant with a turbine that drives a conventional AC alternator. OP was asking about the control strategies that are required to make the varying electrical output compatible with normal steady state grid operations.
