Generator for Pumping Station

Hi

We are constructing a temporary pumping station for sewage and the load requirements are as below

Pumps 2 duty, 1 standby, capacity 375 kW, 415V, operated through soft starter.

Other loads - 25 kW.

kindly help me in finding a suitably sized generator to run this station round the clock and please note that no pumps will start at the same time. ie the worst case scenario will be other loads +1 pump running and the second pump starting.

For soft starting, one rule of thumb is the sum of all running loads plus 2.5 x the load to be started. In your case, 400 + 2.5 x 375 = 1337.5; i.e. 1350 or 1400 kW.

I would verify this with the prospective genset supplier; their particulars may vary somewhat.

One further point - when talking to the generator supplier remember to give them your local elevation and climate conditions as this will affect the performance of the generator and will likely reduce the peak output so youmay need a gen with a larger than apparently needed output

Sounds like a commercial venture, I would suggest a Cummins Genset, ya I work for Cummins, but it is a good product. I do not represent Cummins, but I am suggesting you take a look at the HC Range of gensets, they run on just about any fuel you can come up with.

Dear Mr. rajnathr,

You have NOT mentioned, the Type of Motor used, and it has a ROLE in the magnitude of STARTING CURRENT, for the Motor. I am sure you will be using Slip-Ring Motor for the capacity of 375 KW.

Normally the Bigger size Motor is started first and then smaller Motor or other loads put on. Since only one Pump starting with other load of 25 KW, (45 Amps.) and for 375 KW, the Current will be 680 Amps., and the Power Factor is considered as 0.8.

TOTAL LOAD will be 725 Amps, But the STARTING CURRENT LOAD is applicable for 375 KW, (Obviously the 375 KW Motor Type, should be SLIP-RING type) and you should USE/SELECT "AUTO SLIP RESISTOR" Type STARTER, only to limit the starting Current with in 2.4 Times the FULL LOAD CURRENT and then only Starting Current will be contained to 2.4 Times the Full Load current, that is 1632 amps.

When one pump running and other load is 25 KW, the current will be 725 Amps, under this condition, when you start the second pump, the Momentary Load will be 725 + 1632 = 2357 Amps.

1200 KW DG set i.e. 1500 KVA Set will be SUFFICIENT, if the Motor is Slip-Ring Type.

If is Star-Delta Motor is used, the DG Set should be of 1500 KW or 2000 KVA., which will be MORE COSTLY
