Earth Fault in VVVF Drives

07/09/2013 1:14 AM

VVVF drives are used for hydraulics pumps and its circulation motors. But after some duration of operation drive is tripping on earth fault. we checked throughly for any problem in motors and cables, but both things found normal. After resetting fault operation found normal. This porblem is repetative and comes once/twice a week. What we have to do? Drive to motor cable length is approx 125 Mtr and output choke is not introduced in the drive.

For that long of a run, it seems that line output reactors should be present. How that might affect the fault indications, I'm not sure.

Talk to the drive manufacturer or look in the drive manual or application notes, the lack of a choke may be your problem.

Agreed. Capacitive coupling on the output conductors is the usual suspect. A reactor at the very least is indicated, a Sine Filter is a better idea, this may be an indicator of other problems as yet unseen, such as voltage spikes at the motor insulation that are going to lead to motor winding failure in relatively short order.

Just checking... is the drive tripping on an earth fault, or do you have ELCB that is tripping? Are you using generator or mains supply?

No ELCB is installed. ABB make ACS-550 Drive is used for this application.

Main grid supply is used for the same. There is no generator power back up for the same.

Just checking to see what type of drive you have as well are you using O-Flex or similar cable? I ran into similar problems caused by harmonics in a machine that had standard wiring used. The harmonics would build up enough to trip the drive on "Buss Over Voltage" as well as when running at over speed (90 Hz) the drive would have so much harmonic current "Current Overload".

Hope this helps...

Drive is of ABB make ACS-550 model. Cable is general pupose stranded cable.
