Why The Generators Are Mostly Star Connected ?

07/10/2013 5:34 AM

Generators / alternators having stator windings as star connected mostly what is the reason for having star winding on stator side. The rotor is a permanent magnet rotating with the constant frequency with prime mover. why on the single line / designs we always prefer star connected generators.

Is this due to

Less voltage stress as compared to delta

Differential protection is easy to configure in star

...or is it to do with the ability to connect single-phase loads to it? Hmmmm.....

Only if protection against electric shock is a consideration.

They are that way for the same reason that my new fiber optic phone, TV, and internet service access point needs a 8 foot ground rod.

Star, less insulation of windings needed, which will reduce the size of the equipment,.

i) Lesser insulation needed between line & earth (only for phase voltage)

ii) Can connect single phase loads

iii) Can earth the neutral and get the benefits of an earthed neutral system.
