I started the thread more as an indictment of the media; plus it's pretty funny.
How is it that the NTSB confirmed the names? That sounds like a staightout lie.
"These names were not accurate despite an NTSB official in Washington confirming them late this morning," the anchor said. "We apologize for this error."

Wow! We are really getting to the point that we are tripping over ourselves in the search for something offensive.
They still don't realize that they aren't "names" at all; they are statements that have breaks in them, to make them look like names, and nobody caught it.
Maybe 15 years ago some guys recorded the PA announcers at a couple British airports as they had fake names paged. That was funny. Using fake name at the TV station when people have died - not so funny. Hard to believe the lady reading those names didn't catch them immediately - but these news readers aren't hired for their brains.
Maybe I'm just sick. I see no connection between the fact that people died, and somebody making a laughing stock of the media...which is what they've become.
It was just fake pilots' names; not an attempt to make light of the deaths.
Now the national media keeps replaying the original broadcast, and it's becoming completely ridiculous.
Some people are so depraved, they think it's funny to crack jokes after they are dead.
Media can be pretty pushy to get info in emergency situations. When lives are at stake and the people responding have other responsibilities that may mean life or death to the victims. Whom ever the guy was the NTSB should make their spokesperson. Quick thinking on their feet. If you read the names as a sentence
Captain somethings wrong
fly to low
ho lee fuk
bang ding ow
Maybe poor taste under the situation, it's not racist and the media deserves what it gets.

In their race to get things on television, they don't bother to check anything anymore. We have no way of knowing what's real, much less trusting them.

I was amazed that an erroneous local news story was the opening story on the Today show. They played the entire segment, and then commented on how racially offensive it was.
I think this picture would be an apt description of American journalism:

I cringed when, after Hersman referred to the "stick shaker" activation at 4 seconds out, a reporter later asked for clarification as to what a "stick shift" did on an airplane.
