You can get small PLCs or other microcontrollers that are Internet addressable. Such a device would go at the genset end, while you would interact with it via any Web browser at your end. You will want passwords to keep others from interacting with your genset, though.

You can not buy any off the shelf product. You should have PLC to convert the commands into action. PLC will inter act with DG circuitry for Dg Start, Dg stop, breaker close, breaker trip, engine fault monitoring, electrical fault monitoring etc. PLC should be communicable with smart phones. These are all system built. I have developed put into operation for remote unmanned DG installations for Rural telephone exchanges.

If this is cheap DIY look at an Arduino with a shield. Shields are plug-on boards for various functions like small motor or relay control, data aquisition etc. All of them are open-source hardware and software and so there may already be a shield that will do what you want.

Even if it's not a 'cheap' project, the power, versatility and reliabiltiy of the atmel chips used on the 'arduino' and related procucts can't be beat. Interface boards are readily available online or at your nearest Radio Shack. Software is 'open sourced' and also available online, do a search, someone has probably done and documented a simular project. This format is used worldwide.
