Cable Tracker

07/18/2013 7:40 AM

Is there such a device, that tracks a wire cable properly on to a cable drum, to prevent uneven spooling?

The device at this link is used on winches to provide constant pressure on the spool as it is wound onto the drum. What type of cable, how big a spool, etc., are you dealing with?

One name for such a device is "fairlead".

Fairlead will guide the cable to the spool but it will not keep the cables aligned and spooling properly.

If a fairlead is positioned correctly and the wire cable is not damaged, then it will spool back and forth nicely.

Not on my winches! Without some aid (which might just be a gentle nudge now and then) the cable can bunch up on one side or the other. The winch manufacturer even cautions about this and that's why they also sell the tension devices!

Yes there is but unfortunately my memory isn't too good for 30 years ago and I don't remember the name for it. Saw several of these being used at an AT&T cable prep and distribution site in Piscataway, NJ. They really do a fine job on different size cable and reels.

Due to the break-up the phone giant and the utilization of fiber optics, etc. I don't know where to direct you exactly but I would suggest that the following might produce some answers for you.

1. Contact AT&T engineering and they may have an operation somewhere for cables.

2. Ditto for Verizon. They still use copper locally and might be able to tell you where for further investigation. If they buy their cables from an independent supplier ask them who it is and follow up on them.

3. Google something like "telephone cable manufacturers/suppliers" or similar to that.

4. These cables come in a variety of sizes so don't give up on your searches. Just because one doesn't make/have one they may be able to steer you in a better direction.

Ask these outfits and they may be helpful in finding more about the machine. Hope you find the answer!

Good Luck, Old Salt

Ask a fisherman or a logger or a crane operator or an elevator manufacturer.
