We'll get around to that shortly.

Well, what does the facility's piping standard have to say on the topic? It's just that it can't be seen from here.

Main steamline in modern Ultra super critical plants or super critical plants are constructed by following CSEF (Creep Strength Enhanced Ferritic) Steels. However, Nickel based super alloys and Austenitic Stainless Steels are superior than CSEF in high temperature operation. Unfortunately Ni Alloys&ASS are very costly than CSEF. Special care is required during joining of CSEF and subsequent PWHT to get the desired microstructure.

ASME SA P122

ASME SA 92

ASME SA 91

Following materials also can be used for high temperature operation. But, they are inferior in creep strength compared to above mentioned ferritic grades. SA 333 Gr-6 is used for low temperature operation due to it's superior toughness property.

ASME SA P22 - High temperature operation service

ASME SA P11 - Moderate to High temperature service

ASME SA 106Gr.B - Moderate temperature service

ASME SA 333Gr-6 - Low temperature operation

thank u very much for this information mr anonymous

i would like to know which is cheaper and better fit for a main steam piping system which has operating temperature of 300-400 degress celcius, ive encountered before sa-335 p22, sa-106 gr.c, but mostly sa-333 gr.6 and sa-106 gr. b

iwould like to focus on the latter 2, your feedback is highly appreciated

Low Carbon steels can be used safetly below 400 Degree celcius, if the exposure time is short at peak temperature. Otherwise better use Low alloy steel, if long term exposure is required. I suggest you to refer ASME B&PV Sec-II Part-D for stress values of all interested materials before a conclusion. Most of the designers prefer ASME SA 106 Gr.B over ASME SA 333 Gr.6 for elevated temperature service. Moreover, ASTM issued separate standards for these materials due to it's behaviour in elevated temperature service and low temperature service.
