  • One of them cannot be used safely in a zone 1 or zone 2 hazardous area and the other can.
  • One of them will not withstand the fury of an internal explosion without transmitting it to the exterior and the other will provided all the cables attached to it are properly glanded using flameproof glands.
  • One of them weighs a lot less than the other, which is a feature of their respective capabilities at withstanding internal explosions.
  • One of them is available over-the-counter at most electrical distributor outlets and the other is a little bit more difficult to find.
  • One of them can be opened for live testing relatively safely while the other cannot without first raising a Hot Work Permit and the associated flammable gas detection equipment being in use nearby, as one of them will not be in a zone 1 or zone 2 hazardous area and the other one will be.
  • One of them doesn't have a type-test certificate raised by an accredited national or pan-European hazardous area equipment testing house for use in zone 1 or zone 2 hazardous areas, and the other one does.

  • One of them can be opened using simple tools such as a flat- or Philips-head screwdriver or an open-ended spanner, while the other cannot.
  • One of them can be installed by someone without special training in the selection and use of electrical equipment in potentially-explosive atmospheres, whereas the other really needs to be installed by specially-trained persons.

Ex d flameproof junction boxes have to be strong to withstand an internal explosion and allow the escaping gasses to cool enough so the gasses outside the box don't ignite. Due to this they are generally made out of aluminium and stainless steel.

If none of these responses here help, and a quick search of the internet or Wikipedia doesn't help try reading the relevant Ex d flameproof junction box hazardous area standards IEC 600079.0 and IEC 60079.1. No I won't send you a copy as they are not free, you have to purchase them.

This sounds a lot like homework, so that's all you are getting from me.

Well before my time, I've never seen one let alone had to certify one.

A flameproof junction box won't burn.

Do you know why we use 3 phase and not 6 or 9 or 24?

Is that a trick question?

Do you know why bean counters only allow 239 beans in each can of beans?
