Looking for Tacky/Sticky Reusable Adhesive

08/06/2013 3:00 PM

I searched your site and found that there's been talk about this subject in the past hopefully you guys still have some answers for me...

We're working on a product, we'd like to find a means to stick our product to plastic, metal, glass without using permanent adhesive, unreliable suction cups, or anything that leaves permanent marks. We'd also like the stuff to be reusable like suction cups. We're seeing products like Clingo or Capta pop up with a sticky TPU or TPR material, it seems like it must not be so complex to make as some people are brewing some at home, however I am not familiar with chemistry too much and don't know where to find this formula or how to make it. From my months of research in the subject people surmise that it's simply a sticky TPU or TPR without too much hardner in it. Is that the case?

I need to find someone who makes it, or find out how to make it, or find a place where someone can make it. Can anyone here be of assistance?

Not sure what you really want. Something along the lines of a Post-it?

The problem with reusable sticky stuff is that everything, dust, dirt, finger fat, hair, etc. sticks to it so it doesn't retain its sticky properties.

And, the non-residue requirement is really hard to meet. There's the problem of which surface is more receptive to the adhesive. You've pulled labels off of stuff, only to have the adhesive to remain on the "wrong" surface, right?

Could be TPE (elastomer) TPU (urethane) TPR (rubber) or even silicone.

Not much help, I know.

Thanks for the reply, it's not for sticky notes, it's a universal attachment for electronic devices. It's going to be made from plastic and have some means to stick it to other objects. We're trying to replace suction cups as they are very unreliable, one second they're really stuck and the next second they're on the floor, the second air gets in there it drops, sticky materials tend to give a bit of notice.

They do make plenty of materials that are sticky but leave no marks, when they get dirt or dust on them, when they get washed the sticky part is neutralized so it can be washed, when dry it's sticky again. I've been messing with a few materials like that recently, one from 3M was the best so far but they don't make that commercially, only for retail so it won't work for me. Also it only does about 1lb per sq/in and I believe they make stuff that'll do 8-10lbs!

I think a craft store may be your best bet.

You almost had this stuff named in your thread title.

I wonder if this stuff is available yet?

It's not a putty... command stuff is close to the stuff I'm looking for. 3M's Scotch Restickables is better than both of those things but it's only available in packages not in bulk, and it's only 1lb per sq/in.

...this is what I'm after

It's like a gel sticky pad that they've upped the stickiness, it's then attached to a plastic plate and then to a car mount. Dozens of manufacturers and even very small hobbyists on Kickstarter all use a material like this but I don't know where to source it.

I would suggest obtaining a copy of the "Handbook of Adhesives" by Skeits. It is considered to be the "bible of adhesives". It is available through Amazon or a library in a city may have it.

What you are looking for appears to have properties that might conflict each other, at least from a adhesive components view point. You may have a hard time finding such a product.

My other suggestion would be to contact the tech. service (or comparable) dept. of several manufacturers. H B Fuller, L D Davis Industries, U S Adhesives, Wilson Adhesives, Clifton Adhesives, and Henkel would be good places to start. When you contact them, if they don't have what you want, ask them for a recommendation of someone that might make it.

Good Luck, Old Salt

I would go and checkout http://www.masterbond.com/ or at least pop them the same question.

I think your best bet is to find something cheap, reliable, and that can just be used each time and thrown away afterwards.

kramarat hit it dead on with the sticky mat. If you're looking for a product to hold a mobile phone, MP3 player etc. then the sticky mat would be your best bet!

The sticky mat is also made from plasticized TPU however, it's a product, I'm looking for how to put this tech onto my product.

...I have some of this stuff it works decently well, however, 3m has told me that they will not produce these in bulk quantities for manufacturing purposes :(
What is that stuff made from anyway? I heard it was plasticized vinyl?

I found this patent just now... it sounds like the same stuff...

Broman-

If you haven't found the adhesive you want yet I would like to suggest that you consider several types of adhesive out of the several hundred types (types, not brands or brands of glue). For instance their are: Polyvinyl Acetate based; hot melts; contact; neoprene based; latex based; solvent based with many, many different solvents; casein based; animal glue; dextrin based; acrylonitrile (super glue) based; Urea/formaldehyde; phenol/formaldehyde; polyvinyl alcohol; polyvinyl acetate/polyvinyl alcohol; ethylene vinyl acetate; starch based and many, many others too numerous to list. All of these formulations are made to achieving an end use. Likewise the personnel who develop these formulas are extremely knowledgeable in their small segment of the industry. See post #8. These people in the industry are the ones you should be asking.

No offense to other posters, but how do you know how versed we are in adhesives, adhesive formulation, adhesive properties, and adhesive end uses. Anyone of use could be leading you astray or directing you to the best answer.

I suggest that you contact an outfit named Gluefast, www.gluefasst.com and are located in Neptune, NJ. They are a very knowledgeable distributor and will help you whether or not they carry such an item as you want. Try some of the others in your area or contact some of the manufacturers listed in post #8. This will probably be your best and quickest resolution to your problem. If you wanted to buy a 20 ton dump truck would you ask advice from a guy who only sells pick-ups?

I have no financial interest in Gluefast but they were one of the customers of the adhesives plant that I was plant manager of in my early career. I am not recommending a particular adhesive for you because my major involvement was to profitably operate the plant. I always went to the development manager for recommendations of glues for a particular use. One thing I learned there was to keep my eyes opened to any and all solutions. You can easily get stuck with something!

Good Luck, Old Salt

I think that if anyone came up with an adhesive that could be used over and over again...forever; with no chance of wearing out or failure, they would throw the idea in the trash. There's no profit in selling something once.

Is Velcro not an option?

Velcro is not an option, it requires a sticky backing which leaves permanent marks, I have done even more digging, it's apparently TPR "thermal plastic rubber" that's been formulated with as little wax as possible and with very little cross linking in the chains.

I have several competitors who already use this and can brew it in their garages! certainly it's not too complex to make.

Looks like you can just order the pellets and melt them into anything you want...

It seems I'm in almost exactly the same situation as you.
I've tried:
Airstick microsuction foam - Works ok on extremely smooth surfaces

Handstands car item pad - basically the same thing (kinda spongey grippy foam)

Kavii Gel Pads - These are quite sticky pads with strong tack and good hold strength. However they do seem to have a slow release meaning after a long time a lot of weight will slip them off.

Aonsen Velcro phone Universal Smartphone Car Mount Holder with a Lightweight Multifunction Sticker - I bought this strangely advertised chinese item on a whim and because the lady in the review video said it was very sticky. To my surprise this is by far the best product for this situation. The tape is insanely sticky, almost like a rat trap. And yet after covering it in dust and hair I was able to clean it off and use it like new. The bad news is they are $10 each and I have no idea where to get the tape they use. It's just like you described, strong re-usable tape secured to a bit of foam which is then secured to a rigid platform with an even stronger bond.
If anyone knows where to get this stuff, I think it's exactly what you and I need.

Let me know if you make any headway, as will I.
