Another Job Offer Out of Nowhere Again!

08/09/2013 9:28 PM

I got in last night and had a ondd message on my answering machine. It was one of my old bosses for around 8 - 9 years ago and he was calling from a new place he went to work for.

I figured no big deal I used to get all the wood pallets from where I used to work with him and burn them for firewood so I just figured he changed jobs and found me a new source.

Nope. Apparently one of the main service techs at the place he works at now died of a heart attack last friday and going by what he knows of me I was top person on his list of people who are natural fits for this sort of service work.

They are in supposedly in dire need of a new person and my skill set is well known to be hard to find as is. I did a short Q & A interview and it sounds like I am hired if I want the job.

It's a local RV dealership so the customer base is all people with disposable incomes which makes things nice and the primary pay scale is based on billable hours not hours worked so for a person like me that can find ways to make 4 - 5 hour service jobs into 2 - 3 or less hour jobs I would be getting paid for the billable time 5 hours even if the job only takes me 2!

Plus all onsite service work is done with two people even if its as simple as changing out an RV toilet that weighs 30 pounds and takes 20 minutes to do!

On top of all of that it's a 8 - 5 M - F work schedule.

Still wish he was calling about pallets though.

Sounds good.....but I'm thinking you might end up with an RV.....Do you really want another job? ....or are you just bored?

To be honest no I do not want any job. I am rather well suited to being a bum and I know it and believe me I am far from bored. Ever.

To be honest I put in as many hours a week doing work for family and friends now that I took the summer off as I did at any other job plus I get paid well, usually in cash for my work, but my wife does not see working from home as being employed no matter how much I get paid and thinks that I should be working for all day to pay someone else to do my work at home for twice or more as much an hour as I make at where I work.

I would not mind having a RV and my wife wants one so that she can travel but not actually leave the house if that makes any sense.

Mostly the guy who contacted me is one of maybe 4 bosses/managers I have ever had in my life that I actually respected for his abilities and people skills which when coming from me means a lot.

The place we worked together at years ago shut down the service department because it looked good on paper to the bean counting suits in a high office in some other state a 1000 miles away from our store and he and the regional manager above him fought hard to keep me but got shot down anyway. Fortunately because of their efforts I did get a severance package that was good enough for me to go out on my own with.

Given that if he likes where he is working plus knows my work ethic first hand and sees me as a good fit I trust his judgement.

But I really was not looking! I swear!I was really hoping that he just had some firewood or used oil to get rid of.

Being regularly employed goes against the very core of my belief systems.

I hate when jobs find me because the tend to work out well in the long term which does not suit my short attentio...............

You have a lot of respect for this guy, so it might work out well. It doesn't sound too monotonous, and might actually be interesting at times. I used to enjoy working on boats, it's kinda like working on a car, with a house built around it. Working on RV's, I guess, would be about the same, except they don't float (for long).

You should probably try it for a while. It can't hurt anything. The nice thing about jobs, is if you don't like them, just don't go there.

I was an actual employee, for about four months, last year. It was interesting, educational, and prompted a new direction in my career. I would have to say, being an employee for four months, changed my life. It might change yours too.

Disclaimer: Employment longer than six months may result in burnout, stifled imagination, loss of independent thinking, debt exceeding income, monotony and hives.

Any chance of working a short week say 3 or 4 days? That would give you the best of both worlds and the time to actually use an RV.

The short week concept was already discussed in detail. The intention is to do just that for the first few months being they know full well this was dropped on me unexpectedly while I had plans to not look for work until later this fall.

2 - 3 days a week is the plan until then. Granted only working 8 hours a day 5 days a week is not really going to cut into my time all that much anyway. I was quite used to working 60+ at previous jobs then putting in another 20 - 30 at home.

We get that here on occasion as well. If a guy is not paying attention they will slip an extra few hours a day and a extra few days a week in on him.

At my last job there were a lot of day where I know they slipped an extra 5 - 6 hours in on me somewhere between 6:30 am and 6:30 pm plus another 2 - 3 days during my Saturday - Wednesday work week as well.

I guess its easy to get 60+ when you do 5 hour jobs in 2 or 3. but then thats billable, not actual so you could find 150 hours billable or more in a real 60+.

If it doesn't work out, they could get hold of 7055; he might be in Fargo around then.

Here's a thought: Take the job under the condition that he hires a young guy to work with you, that you can train. Even better if the extra person is someone you know who is dependable and needs the work. That way you can do the work for a while, banking the $$ you make while helping someone else get paid while he develops some useful work experience.

Might allow you access to an RV that you and the wife could use for a couple weeks for a trip.

I know people who are either dependable or need work but not both.

I have to go out of town for a week or two now to do some repair work for a buddy of mine at his scrap yard so once I get back I will be finding more out about this job.

As I said I really don't need more work or a normal job right now. I have far too much to get done this summer than is possible as is but given the place and the potential pay it's sparked enough interest for me to check out anyway. The 40 - 45 hour work week thing is the most appealing.

My wife is already dreaming of what RV she wants. Good thing I have the class A CDL.

Back in May and June, both times on a Sunday, I was driving from MPLS to Fargo, and saw uncountable 15-20 foot RV trailers all headed to (I assume) western ND (they did have names on intransit papers like Bismark). I bet you get the opportunity to winterize these for all the oil field trash.
