Prediction of Corrosion/Selection of Materials Using Models

08/19/2013 1:10 AM

How do we relate the Prediction of Corrosion/selection of materials made using computer models/databases to the reliability of materials selected for a new design?

When a new design is attempted we come across many instances of proven and unproven experience on the performance of materials. If the reliability of materials is unproven, exploring their use in a process environment is risky. Can we rely on Corrosion Prediction/material selection using computer models to convert the Unproven experience into a meaningful design?

Well, one could rely on materials compatibility charts, such as this.

You should research the subject to determine what work has already been done.

Where have you looked so far?

Don't reinvent the wheel, do some basic research, on your own.

As we all know Corrosion is complex in nature and requires inputs from various sources for finding the cost-effective life assurance solutions. We need to account many factors for sourcing the right causes as well as overcoming all uncertainties. Control methods find proven for one area may not be suitable for other geographies since corrosion is influenced by internal and external environmental changes. A structured analysis is required for documenting the worst case aggressive conditions and considering foreseen agressive changes for the actual passive cases or vice-versa.

"Ditto", above ...

particularly the bottom-link in lyn's post. NACE International (National Association of Corrosion Engineers, International) has an "India Gateway" Section <link].

Get involved with your Section; collectively, if "THEY" don't have the information that you seek, then it likely doesn't yet exist.

The NACE (Corrosion) Forum has far more "Corrosion Experts" (oil-&-gas, pipeline, refinery, chemical industry, etc) taking part therein than you will ever find here (no disrespect whatsoever intended!)...including a few from India who 'stand-out'..

Wishing you success~

Absolutely it is a collaborative exercise for finding technology answers to resolve corrosion issues in many environments. Experience what we gather from one geography may or may not be directly useful for current situation, but certainly provides insights for handling uncertainties that come along the manufacturing/design/application/assessment processes.
