Egypt Map from 1960

08/21/2013 8:37 PM

Back in the early 1960's I was in high school, and a classmate mentioned "Bumfuk Egypt".

I thought he was just being funny, but he showed me the globe and sure enough, there it was.

Perhaps someone from the same era remembers it also,or perhaps an old school house globe from that era?

I know many jokes have been made about it, and a Google search shows nothing except the slang usage.

A modern globe does not show it.I would like to find a globe from the time period of the late 1950's early '60's to find it.

Anyone got any links to a detailed authentic map of Egypt from that time period?

The ones I have found do not list small cities in detail as did the old globes.

There is no such place nor has there ever been. It is an American military term referring to the middle of nowhere started in the 1960's. What is strange is that they used the British term for butt "bum". I suspect the globe you saw had been altered by someone trying to be funny.

Lots of folks here in the US use bum and butt interchangeably.

Otoh, 'Fanny' has a very different meaning in the UK from its common US usage. (They must smile when they hear a woman from the US talk about her 'fanny pack'.)

Yeah! You really gotta be careful when talking to women.

In the US,tell a woman she looks like a million bucks, and that is a compliment.

But tell her she looks like a million pounds......

But then why did the name get attached specifically to Egypt?

The thought crossed my mind at the time, so I looked at the globe in our library and it was there also.If it was edited, they did a very good job restoring the shiny finish and printing exact duplicates of the fonts in use on the rest of the globe.I wonder if my classmate was arrested for counterfeiting?

Lots of names have come and gone since then, and countries have changed names,Constantinople comes to mind, for instance. And Persia.Anyway, it probably has vanished into the past, like the Weekly Reader and real service stations, and 25Cent Gasoline.

But I do distinctly remember seeing it on more that one globe at the time.

That is why I was inquiring about an old original globe or map from the '60's.

Anyone around in that time period that remembers it?

I was always interested in my uncle's globe. I was born in the early 50's. I'm certain I saw this place on his globe in the 60's but have never seen it again. I even showed a few friends at the time. If it has never been a real location then possibly someone drawing the map for the globe did it as a sort of prank. I've never had anyone else say they have seen it on a map or globe. Unfortunately I have no idea what happened to the globe.
