Selection Criteria and Sizing of Diesel Generator

08/22/2013 9:57 PM

Some time back, an anonymous member in CR4 Forum, asked or wanted to know WHAT ARE THE CRITERION FOR SELECTION or SIZING of A DIESEL GENERATOR CAPACITY.

I have also posted an answer for the topic and mentioned the Web-Link will be copied and posted here after retrieving from my Folders saved in my Archives.

Accordingly it is retrieved and the Web-Link is given below, which gives brief and clear details. I hope this serves the purpose for that Member and I am sure he will see this. This link is obtained from the main link, where more than 35 topics are given there,

Use the search utility and you will find the post you are replying to.

If it was an anonymous OP, I doubt very much they will look.

When you select ratings of diesel engine(HP) & alternator(kVA @0.8 pf) for a DG set by how much should be the engine bigger than the alternator considering efficiency of transmission, losses, starting kVA/HP/pf,type of loads,duty(prime/continuous/standby),type of governor etc?.

They have mentioned about loads like UPS & fire pump and a software for others. I need literature of sizing for various types of load such as AC1,2,3.. & electric lift, rapid on/off load like pressure boosters using pressure switches. In BS 7671 I saw a worked example for estimating cable size for lift(escalator),for DG set similar method is needed.

Re: Selection Criteria and Sizing of Diesel Generator

Can I ask a question?

If i have a generator of say 500kva pf 0.8lag = 400+j300 kva And my total load is 300kva pf .6 lag = 180 +j239 kva

The generator kw is higher than load kw likewise, generator kvar is higher than load kvar. Therefore the generator size is okay. The kw ang kvar of generator is sufficient for loads

But because the load is on 0.6pf lagging the generator will still fall to 0.6lagging causing failure as per thermal capability limit?

We cannot add capacitor in parallel with generator just to increase the power factor. Any solution? Thanks

It is not advisable and it is dangerous to correct the power factor of your generator.

Nobody can answer?

Ill give you a clue.. check the thermal capability curve again, the answer is there.
