Project Ideas

08/25/2013 10:17 AM

Hi,

I'm doing bachelors in mechanical engineering. I'm looking forward to do a project related to design or something that provides solution to industrial problems, but I don't seem to be gratified after an intensive brainstorming that gave me some problems to consider as projects. Kindly, post your ideas or problems related to mechanical scenario that I can consider as my project and work upon.

P.S:Problems meaning ideas related to industrial design, robotics, manufacturing or any other problem that can possibly be considered as project.

Write a software program that generates senior project ideas. It will sell like hotcakes to millions of persons in this same predicament. Charge US$19.95 for Web download, and you'll get rich quick.

I think you should do a project on methods of removing heat while machining metals.

Study the relative merits of mist cooling vs flooding the work piece.

Maybe you can re-write the laws of physics to make mist cooling more efficient than flooding.

Now, since we know nothing about you, your education, your strengths and weaknesses, your likes and dislikes, I think it's an incredible reach to ask strangers to make major life decisions for you.

This does not bode well for you.

Do a web search:

How miserable are you? A college age kid who wants to do an interesting senior project wants to know what some pretty smart people think would be a challenging subject area.

Once again, why don't you shut TFU?

Hey thanks for your idea. Ironically, I just completed that project(Cooling during machining operation by mist flow). As coquettish as the idea was, it was an arduous project as well.

Do you have any other idea in your mind?

Thanks again...

I know. That's why I asked the question.

What were the results of that project?

How about developing a new method of moving people in multi-story buildings, instead of elevators and ecsalators.

I normally don't do this but what about design, fabrication and test of a device used to pick and place sub-micron transistors. That would be an informative project.

design a simple off road manual wheelchair suitable for home construction which will take 'standard' size wheels from the users normal chair so that a compromise set of wheels could be used for both.

I'd suggest important design choices:-

3 wheels vs 4.
The smaller wheels at front or back?

Position of C of G... maybe make this adjustable for up/down hill
Anti roll back/roll forward/braking mechanism. maybe with buildt in dirt brish/scraper.
If you do a good job, I'll build one.

Re: Project Ideas???

I'd give a strong vote for designing and prototyping a threaded fastener that can be used to join two pieces in which the clearance holes are not drilled in the right places.

I'm thinking of employing Van der Waals force in a novel way, such that the the fastener could be discontinuous at the joint surface but with torque and tension transmitted across the discontinuity. As you learned in your classes, Van der Waals force allows a gecko to walk upside down across a ceiling. The tiny hairs on the gecko's feet have a combined mass of .005 g, yet they can support a gecko of several thousand times that mass.

Time-shifting would be another alternative to solve the problem above. As you can probably see, each of the fasteners in the picture could be installed one at a time. It is merely a matter of time shifting to allow all to be installed at the same time.

An alternative project (for this same problem) would be to investigate the use of a very large hammer and a conventional fastener. In the pictured case, one can imagine that, given a big enough hammer, a fastener could be pounded into place. You could call this a Forged Into Place FIP fastener. (This would replace the earlier technology, Forged Under Known Displacement [FUKD]) You always want to end your paper with suggested further research. The further research would be to make the hammer nano sized (so no need for swinging room).

Here's another thought: I wonder if it would be worth considering changing to a major in which you had enough interest to easily come up with a project?

In your picture, I'd suggest fitting a KrisDel venier adjustable hole. The two axis adjustable hole comes in a handy pack of 3. Just be careful once they are out of the wrapper.

Re: Project Ideas???

Is a three-axis adjustable hole also available? At times I don't have a fastener that is either long enough or short enough. Usually, I then just body putty over the hole, (because most fasteners are redundant) but I am searching for a more professional approach (or, truth be told, one that looks more professional).

Is there a KrisDel spray that will stabilize the hole after it is installed? In some other brands of hole, anything loose nearby is pulled into the hole, which increases its ability to attract stuff... so more stuff gets pulled in... and before you know it, the authorities show up.

I am a little miffed at the overseas company that supplied my last package of holes. One had three cargo containers and a delivery truck inside.

When are you going digital? Verniers are so five minutes ago. When holes are digitized, will we have to go through the whole 2 bit 4 bit 8 bit 16 bit progression? Or will you be able to do a pradigm-shifting leveraging to concurrent transoptimal tech?

Assuming you are going digital, will this C program work to change hole location:

{while

&% // >> 4 "}

?

LynDoor™ Specialty Bolt Supply offers a complete line of custom bolts for many applications.

These bolts are especially useful for holes produced on Mondays and Fridays when management may be subbing for operators who don't come to work.

Available in SAE or metric sizes.

We also offer custom holes that allow you to use all the custom hardware you buy from us.

I have included a selection chart below to allow you total design latitude in case special holes are needed. We also can supply custom holes, made to order.

Lyn,

LynDoor™ Specialty Bolt Supply offers a complete line of custom bolts for many applications.

Your products are exactly what OMG Industries needs for our repair division. We routinely encounter all of the hole conditions you have described in many different threads, SAE and Metric.

Do you have a bolt that is threaded both SAE and Metric threads on the same bolt so I can reduce my double inventory?

Ah you need the KrisDel 'Conformabolt' made of a special material* design to adopt the thread need at the time. This High tech material also has special self lubricating properties and is easily extracted with the application of heat should the need arise.

Just discharge a fully charged one farad capacitor from bolt head to the metal of the hole. Something will weld together and hold the bolt in place.

How about a prop-wash recycling device to increase the efficiency of propeller driven devices?

Or maybe a more advanced form of monkey wrench that advanced primates could use.

Or maybe a doughnut machine that can make bagels too.

I think you should consider a project related to beer!

It does not matter about the details it can be anything.

The advantages are numerous:

1. Any left overs from the study project are easily recycled.

2. There should be no shortage of volunteers to assist with research.

3. There are so many things that have not been thourghly researched yet. Consider the application of new Nano-tecknowlegy.

If you can't come up with an idea, do you think you should be doing engineering?

Well! I believe that engineers are the ones who solve your problems. Hence, if people like me don't ask for problems from layman and always consider to work with the self generated ideas, I guess that wouldn't give me any right to call myself an engineer either.

You didn't ask for a problem to solve you asked for a solution to your own problem. By your logic no one is an engineer. you are persuing a batchelor's so you are right in not being able to call yourself an engineer ( Yet ) From WIKI: "

The Bachelor of Engineering (commonly abbreviated as BEng or BE) is an undergraduate academic degree awarded to a student after three to five years of studying engineering at university or college. The nature of the qualification varies around the world, hence it may or may not be a professional degree and it may or may not involve undertaking some engineering work. The course may or may not be accredited by a national professional society.

You need to consult your professor/project guide first. If your interest is on heat transfer and thermodynamics related subjects study the feasibility of using solar energy in combination with vapor absorption chillers for ac system and compare it with conventional system particularly on energy saving & environmental cost etc.

Re: Project Ideas

How about some type of machine that cleans, lubricates and maintains itself?

Why?

  • Human operators are highly unreliable.
  • Machines operate at peak when they are clean and properly lubricated.
  • A machine does what it's told and doesn't say Yeah, yeah , yeah I did it when they didn't!

This leads me to a second project.

  • A simple centralized lubrication system that houses multiple bulk greases and oils where it is easily accessed by maintenance personnel and visible to the manager for verification.
  • The system will give the proper amount of lubrication to the bearings and slides based on run hours and not a daily, weekly, monthly schedule.
  • The easier it is to maintain and see then it will be done properly.
  • The reservoirs can be clearly marked with the proper type of lubricant.
  • The reservoirs can be filled easily from any type of bulk container.

It's no use asking working engineers for a problem that you can solve as your project. If we have a problem then we have to solve it now. Our employers or clients are not prepared to wait until you have finished your thesis.

What you need to do is look for a gap in the market, or create a solution and then convince people that there is a problem to match your solution. Oops... sorry that is the answer I usually give to marketing students.

1) What is your advisor interested in? I have seen too many undergrad and grad level projects started or even completed and the student's advisor dismisses it with, "I don't find that interesting. I think you should try..."

2) What industries exist near you? Can you talk to them? What problems are they facing? Can you turn this project into a paid or unpaid internship where you get a project completed for credit, some Real World Experience, and the beginnings of a professional network of contacts?
