Grid Connected Solar Power System

08/31/2013 2:07 AM

Dear Friends;

Now a days Grid Connected Solar System is in high light in the News papers. Does Grid Connected Solar Power System requires any Battery Bank ? If yes then how to determine the capacity of battery bank?

Read a book. Do a simple search of this site.

If you found us, maybe you can find something there. There's a million web sites on the subject. DO SOME WORK YOURSELF.

In a nutshell, grid tied systems are for generating revenue by selling excess solar power back to the grid for money or credits.

Grid tied systems do not have a battery storage system as they simply pump excess power back onto the grid.

Off-grid systems are designed to operate more like a backup generator. They store solar power and allow the user to utilize that stored power during other times of the day when the sun is not present.

That being said, you can make a hybrid system that functions like a grid tied system, but also has a battery pack for those moments the grid goes down.

Sizing the battery pack is not a simple thing to do. You must first understand your periodic energy needs (usually in kilo Watts) and you must also know the duration of the down time you want the battery backup system to run.

Also, you should size the battery system so that it never drains the battery more than 50%. Actually, 75% is better as the more you drain the battery, the shorter the life of the batteries.

So, when sizing the battery pack you must also contend with expected battery replacement life and its costs.

As Lyn stated, you need to do a lot of research as the subject is a bit complex.

I really like MJ Lorton's videos on the subject for those that are just getting into solar power. They are a little long, but he does a good job explaining things.

Why all the capitalizations in this question?

Spell check doesn't catch improper capitalizations?

It didn't catch "now a days" either, which it probably couldn't. We're a long ways off from having a semantics checker. Keeps Editor Crankshaft busy, though, whenever he happens to care.

just buy what's on sale, with your lack of knowledge, you'll be burning them up before their time anyways

The last time I checked I recall that grid tie inverter systems must automatically shut down if the grid fails. Here, in the Dominican Republic, the grid fails a lot. To be able to use a grid tie system during a grid failure during a sunny day you need to have a transfer switch and another inverter with a small battery bank. This "mini-grid" fools the big grid tie inverter into thinking that the grid has returned so you can keep using the system during black outs. That is where you would need some batteries. During night time periods a generator could be started during black outs by using the aux output of an inverter or solar controller.
