A Puzzlement

09/12/2013 5:29 PM

I just want to drop this in for discussion folks.

I have been going to the bathroom for years and it has always puzzled me, why do they use security fasteners in the assembly of bathroom stalls? Are bathroom stall dividers really that hot an item that folks would steal them if not for the use of security fasterners?

Thoughts?

Mindless vandalism.

People take the screws and leave the panels. After all, they do have a few minutes with (almost) nothing to do. Boredom. Unhappiness with their failed, pointless and useless lives. Some people simply have a mean streak.

Oh, and the real horses a$$es use the screws to scratch up the panels, pilasters, doors and screens before they leave.

My old Texas uncle had a saying about the shiftless no-goods in his small west Texas town, "some people are so useless they'd steal the stink off sh^t".

You are right, mostly just hatred about their unfair life and how badly everybody's treated them.

Then there's the meth freaks. Nothing in life is important to them. Not even their own children.

There literally isn't a telephone junction box anywhere in my downtown that has not been damaged or destroyed. The copper wires are too small to be of value but the boxes are all destroyed none the less.

I agree, I have seen numerous panels with missing fasteners. whether they just want to steal the fasteners (petty larceny, but why?) or have a destructive bent - as Doorman said 'mindless vandalism'. This has been the case for many years .... perhaps it requires a psycological study, or perhaps one has already been done......

Have you priced stainless steel screws? It's more vandalism than anything I guess.....but the urinals are worth around $400.....

For some people it is the only screw they will ever get.

Not to worry...

Once our president makes everything fair, everybody will be happy, and there will be no need for security screws. If we give them enough money, bad people will simply stop doing bad things.

It isn't politics.

Get off the beach and listen to a speech.

It's a promise. I'm only embracing the fundamental remaking of America.

Stop picking on me...it's not fair.

Yeah.

People are thinking...

Can we just shoot that guy, and put him out of our misery?

Ah, come on - some people just like to destroy what others have laboured to make.

I had a neighbour's kid use their dad's golf driver to drive pebbles through the sourrounding windows - since they where a minor the police would not charge them with vanalism - go figure.

Wow, must be a busy day around the world, no one jumped on my almost too obvious straight line at the begining of the post.

I've been going to the bathroom for years.....

Come on folks, its Friday! lets rock it to the weekend with some ribald humor.

Because it's a technical challenge for the EIT. They are sitting there in that little stall pondering what life is all about when suddenly their eye spy's a challenge. A screw that's not meant to be undone without a special tool. So the creativity now sets in and attempts are made to 'defeat' what was designed to be undefeatable. The challenge and hopefull triumph now comes from using what potential tools one finds available in one's own pockets or within the surrounding stall. Of course keeping the fastener or vandalising the stall is downright mean spirited and worthy of finding that while preoccupied with damaging the stall, you failed to notice that the toilet paper roll is now empty just when you needed it the most.

I don't think they are that creative. The next step up from that level of creativity is penning dirty cliché limericks on the wall.

I am surprised that no engineering thinking contributor has not suggested a couple of big springs between the top of the stall walls, so when the screws are removed, then natural selection automatically squeezes into the picture. (A responsible local authority could also add a vandal resistant screw removing tool to help the cause).

And don't feel sad for the guy who used to clean up the toilet tags .. he might go into advertising. See this French ad.

I suspect that one day a stalls designer was using his product when a large hairy sailor with a screwdriver was occupying the adjacent stall................!!!

So the next time he designed a stall he specified security fasteners.

Give some people a free bathroom and they steal the hardware! I remember the days when there were pay toilets.

If Rashavarek, you have been looking at security fasteners in the bathroom you have been using for years, then one can only wonder if you (a) are stuck in the transit lounge of an airport, (b) got caught and jailed for insider trading on Wall St or (c) cannot work out how to undo enough of those security fasteners to convert the workplace stall walls into exclusive and expensive coffee table tops (with artwork) ... or something like that.

Maybe it is time to change employment and work from home where maybe you do not have stall walls with security fasteners?
