Fab Drawings for Stevenson Fog Bell Apparatus

09/19/2013 8:20 AM

Hi fellow readers. I recently visited a lighthouse and had a lengthy conversation with the keeper. This light house is part of the Maine State Park system and is open to the public several times a year. Part of the tour is the old bell tower which is missing the old Stevenson bell ringing apparatus. It has been replaced by an electronic "bell". The apparatus is a clockwork mechanism that is powered by weights and strikes the bell at specific intervals. In my youth I had wound the Stevenson apparatus several times. The keeper there would like to reconstruct the Stevenson mechanism. I am wondering if there is anyone or any place out there that might have access to a set of shop drawings, fab drawings, assembly drawings, or know where to get them? Internet searches have produced some drawings but nothing one could work with. Thanks in advance!

Check some of these.

I'd look at historical societies records, etc. Some of them may have copies of the drawings.

Good luck.

I suspect that you will not find any drawings except the (patent??) drawings given. (I hope you do though--I would like to be wrong.) Is it possible that there is an actual bell ringer somewhere? If so, would a bunch of photos enable you to make the part drawings? Even better, if there is an example not being used, perhaps the owner would let you could take it apart (in exchange for restoration?), then use a digitizer to produce a computer file, then additive manufacturing to produce the part.

Thanks, I live near the Bath Marine Museum in Bath Maine. They have a unit I think they are refurbishing. I will contact them and see if there is a way to get measured drawings.
