Replica of a Water Pump

09/19/2013 9:44 AM

I need to make a replica of the water pump in the play, The Miracle Worker. I feel that this is a mechanical problem and have researched and can not figure it out; it should look like this:l

Can it be a non-moving silhouette? Does it have to move? Does it actually have to pump water?

You might try e-Bay for hand pumps, or maybe some antique stores.

Thanks for your good suggestion. My director wants it to be a working water pump on stage. I'll check with eBay and some antique stores.

In that case, you should be able to mount it on or in a basin, and just pump the water back into it. Good luck in your production!

We are a small community theatre who is lucky enough to have a mechanical engineer as a volunteer on Saturdays, so I'll just turn this project over to him!!!! I was hoping I could do this one. Thanks for your input.

This works just fine. No different than mounting it on a rain barrel and using it to fill the watering can to go sprinkle the flowers.

Wow! That's exactly what we need. We need to rig it so it will actually pump water on-stage. I'll have to ask the director about the price. Thank you so much.

Thanks to the surge in shows that find old "junk" and re-sell it, or rebuild it, these are getting very pricey.

Using a blown-up cut-out would probably be the easiest way to go, if Savvy's source proves too costly.

Maybe you could find an antique store that would lend you one in exchange for a credit in your program. They could use the free publicity, I'm sure.

propsmistress-

Buy one! Try:

A plumbing supply house

a Tractor Supply Store

a junk yard

a farm supply store

a well stocked hardware store

Finkles Hardware, Lambertville, NJ "the world's most unusual hardware store". Call them they have everything. They may ship you one or tell you where you could find one in your locality. Also ask them who manufactures them and call the manufacturer for a dealer in your area. http://www.finkles.com/

When you ask each one of these, if they don't have one ask them who might.

Good Luck, Old Salt

Hmmmm. If it looks like a water pump abd pumps water, it is not a replica of a water pump. Happy hunting!

Re: Replica of a Water Pump

If the pump is too expensive, or worse, does not work easily after purchasing, you could hide a small pump (like for fish tanks) in the water container with a small (unseen) switch on the pump handle. When "pumped" the switch turns the hidden electric pump on and off regardless of the mechanical ability. This could be done with a wooden cut-out pump.

If a battery or electricity is a problem, just pressurise a small water container, which will "pump" for a while. e.g. like those pressurised garden sprayers.

The effect should be quite "real" on stage without any effort or mechanical problems.

Hope this helps. jt.

Love the price. Unfortunately, the director wants one that looks like the one in the movie, The Miracle Worker, more like the other one you found.

Simply, that the typical patron who would come to the play would have no specific knowledge of the exact type of pump used in the movie.

Secondly, who is to say that the pump used in the movie is historically correct in the first place?

True. Except our city has their own version of the Oscars annually and one category is best props, so we're pretty anal about it! LOL. Plus we like the challenge! We have judges lurking. That's why I've have asked for help here in this forum. And I really appreciate it.

Well,

That's a horse of a different color, then!

You'll need the real thing, since it figures prominently in the movie.

Good luck.

Watch the shipping cost! Cast iron pumps weigh a bit!The $99.00 dollar pump (good price) cost $34.50 to economy ship to my town. Still not bad. You might be able to create an "objet d'art" and resell it for a profit!

Generically look up "pitcher pump." One source might be Lehman's in Kidron, OH, but what I saw seems to be a lot more expensive.

Get yourself a cheap pump like the paraffin pump in the image, then add a lever, some plastic tubing etc and use some material around the pump to create a pump of your choice.

Yes, I'll definitely keep you all posted!! Thanks for your interest. I spoke with the director the other day and told him of this group of geniuses and he was very impressed. If you could make it to Germantown, TN (a suburb of Memphis), I would really like for you to see the show. It will open in January 2014.

I just saw that I should be copying and pasting the original text, so I'm going to try to do that now.
