Blind Flange Thickness Calculation Value Mismatch

09/20/2013 12:10 AM

Hi every one...

i calculated blind flange thickness as per asme section 8 using formula d(cp/se+1.9whg/sed3)1/2.

but i am getting a higher value than asme 16.47 for 40" flange.

what is the reason for this??

Is the right equation in use? It is impossible to tell here, as the heiroglyphs are undefined.

Has the pocket calculator got a low battery voltage?

ashok,

Calculation of flange sizes under ASME Section VIII is by a different methodology, developed by a different regulatory authority than ASME B16.5 ( flanges to 24")and B16.47 ( flanges above 24").

The more flexible ASME VIII rules will always require a more conservative (read thicker) design.

They were never meant to be equal.

actually i am working in a project where i faced a different scenario. There is a 40" flange whose thickness is 90mm as per ASME B16.47. the design pressure is 17 bar and temperature 65 deg. celsius. Is it possible to reduce the thickness of flange by 5mm by in situ machining and after reducing thickness whether it can withstand the same design conditions?
