The Little Virus That Wasn't

09/25/2013 6:01 PM

The commerce department, (that's the people that tell us how to run our businesses), wasted almost $3,000,000 on something that wasn't there.

If you work in private industry, don't do this...it will get you and your entire team fired.

http://bangordailynews.com/2013/07/15/politics/how-the-commerce-department-spent-almost-3-million-on-a-cyberattack-that-didnt-exist/

Can't wait until they're running healthcare. Starts next week.

What happened? I thought I posted this in the OT section.

Oh well.

I could have left off the last sentence.

The thing that gets me about stuff like this, is that, being a bit of a political/current events junkie, I've found that my mind has been numbed to these giant numbers that are constantly being tossed around.

So what? It could have been worse...it was only $3 million.

But then I start thinking about it...

A person that makes $50K a year, (good money to a lot of people), has to get up and go to work every day for 20 years, just to gross $1 million.

I wonder if we are all losing track of how much money, 1 measly million is?

My family doesn't even toss away $5 and $10 dollar bills.

I thought I was posting in the OT section, and just figured out my mistake.

I was in the OT section, but used the "Start a Discussion" button in the upper right. I'll know better next time.

You have to open the "see all threads" tab, and then click on "post to forum" button.

You can imagine my horror when I saw it on the front page.

Just kidding...no horror.

A million here, a million there, pretty soon you're talking real money.

Paraphrase of Everett Dirksen - Wikiquote He used the B word.

Then there's the banking industry. They lost billions on bad paper and hardly took a breath.

Most of the IT people now days are just hackers that get paid a lot.

Look on the bright side, if they couldn't do any work, they couldn't do any harm.

Homeland Security????????? Really???????? At least they didn't call the TSA in.

EDA officials hired an outside cybersecurity contractor for $823,000 to investigate the attack and spent $688,000 to come up with a long-term fix for a problem that didn't exist.

Probably would have spent less if they got them in first before destroying the evidence.

They probably could have had it figured out on CR4, for free.

My wife works for a pretty big law firm, and the IT department is in another city, but they get things fixed and know what they are doing. Something like this just wouldn't happen.

I'm not even a computer geek, and I would have thought to run antimalware programs, before throwing all of the equipment in the crusher.

For some reason, money seems to lose it's value when people enter government...but only on the job.

Admin.

This was a lead in to our overall financial shape in the US, and to get an engineering perspective on where this debt will lead, and how to fix it. Feel free to move it.

The government is spending huge amounts of money, over and above the taxes that they take from us, and it plans to do so into the foreseeable future, with the baseline budget growing every year.

I'm pretty good with numbers, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out where this is going to take us. There are projections that say, that in about 20 years, all US tax receipts will go toward paying the interest on our debt.

I'm not trying to fear monger, I'd just like to hear a rational explanation as to why this isn't a huge problem. Nobody in Washington seems to be concerned in the least.

I've heard economists say that debt is a good thing to have in the mix...I just can't grasp why.

CR4 would respond:

· Not enough information

· Did you try turning it on and off

· Call in a professional who knows what they're doing
