But why?
They don't say.

I never liked the sounds of "the cloud". Kinda like having my neighbor hold my money.

No thanks.

More like Bill Gates holding your operating systems in his pocket.

Yes, soon you will be forced to rent the software, and it won't be on your hard drive.

It'll be cloud based and more expensive. Bend over, here it comes!

I won't be renting anything.

But it's only a matter of time before the government, and people like Gates, stuff the entire internet into a little pay-per-view box.

I'll go back to reading books...if they're still allowed.

You won't have a choice, once Adobe and Microsoft lock up their systems, others will follow.

I'll just bite the bullet and make the switch to the Linux OS. There's always a choice.

I'm beginning to think that we have gone past the point where technology is tool to a place where we are slaves to it.

People think nothing of paying $200.00/month USD for a smart phone and hundreds for PC's and needless games, then hundreds more for malware/antivirus/cloud storage.

I vaguely remember a time when, if you were not at home and needed to call someone on a telephone, you'd have to drive until you found a pay phone. And the call cost a dime.

Then, along came our first electronic leash, the pager, and the rest is history.

I've got my monthly output scaled back to $57 a month for phone, internet and TV.

I've finally caught up with work, so next week I start building my internet sales site; I guess I'll be finding out.

Hopefully there will always be open source. I, like you, will buy but not rent software. I suppose companies can write off the cost since they're making a profit.

Tony: Hey, it's your money. I mean, I'm just holding it for you, like a bank. Except better than a bank, 'cause you know banks always get knocked off. No one knocks off old Tony.

I believe, at some time ,there will be a point at which you have no choice. We continue to lose our choice and our options.

21 April 2011 saw Amazon Web Services (AWS) fall over in a massive worldwide system failure for no apparent reason. (The AWS Simple Storage Services are many PC's in linked remote data networks).

Was this a CLOUD FAILURE or actually an electronic warfare test?

I run 1 system connected to the net and everything else stays disconnected.
With terabyte hard drives now so cheap, why use cloud memory storage?
As for renting software and cloud storage, the low entry cost might be too expensive.

I think cloud companies are placing their hopes in recent generations that read books, little to none at all, (after graduating from school) because they think "it's all there" on the Internet. Since all knowledge resides there, why not let all of your software and data reside there, too. Maybe that generation dividing line is, in fact, where the "deciders" for cloud technology originates.

Despite the willingness of younger people to accept the concept, I think in the end, users still won't represent a majority.

The Internet is/was a progressive step for computer technology. Access to papers, scientific and otherwise, alone, is something we'd have a hard time accomplishing without it. That said, I wouldn't give up the books I've accumulated in my 50+ years of book buying, though most are in storage now. I could never read them all, but, to me, books are just nicer than computer screens or readers.
