Balancing energy needs with environmental restrictions is a constant challenge. A major gas processing plant under construction in Nyhamna, Norway needed innovative control-valve technology to meet rigorous noise requirements. The plant, which will consist of several seabed installations at depths between 800 and 1100 m, will use control valves with low noise trims to helps meet the sound regulations. These trims merge several noise abatement methods including a distinctive passage shape, multistage pressure reduction, exit jet separation, and an expansion area; all calculated to diminish the acoustic energy radiated in the audible range. Some of the valves will have special actuator systems for quick operation. [To access this article a short registration may be required.]
