Junque Science

10/01/2013 11:53 AM

YouTube sends me links for things I "might like".

I do not like them, Sam I Am...not one bit 'cause they are a sham:

This nut tries to explain split-phase power:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehLJdO-bSmE&feature=em-subs_digest-vrecs

...and this yahoo describes 3-phase using batteries: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kkwv5zgCQt8&feature=em-subs_digest-vrecs

This level of disinformation is probably the why and how for some of the questions posed on this forum. I know, I know, these are just two of the possibly thousands on YouTube and other sites...

Most engineers with any real-world experience can distinguish between something that is viable and something that is total codswallop without reference to this forum, though.

If the incoming material is simply too much to handle, simply unsubscribe from it. Job done sticker.

It's true. I am involved in another "flame war" right now with someone promoting another one of these "energy saver" scams and every time I ask him to show me proof of how they manage to violate the laws of physics, he sends me a YouTube link of some toothless idiot who is performing a completely unscientific demonstration in his garage! Somehow, YouTube has become a valid substitute for the scientific method.

Don't let the medium become the message!

I typically consider YouTube good for entertainment not so much for knowledge.

Hm, i do not completely agree, there are some good documentaries on the Yay-tube, and it is great for hobby related stuff.

Off course you have to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I can't tell if you were being sarcastic or not...

.

Were you referring to documentaries about subjects like:

.

Ancient Aliens

.

Chem-trails and HAARP weather weapons

.

Antichrist/End of the World

.

Arc of the Covenant buried on Canadian Island.

.

.

...or perhaps some documentaries not so easily recognizable as History Channel meat and potatoes?

I was talking about the documentaries about WWII, Ted talks, etc... Also they are syposiumiums, with documentarys on space and cosmos with Neil deGrasse Tyson, or Brian cox.

Or history of Egypt, the crusades, the Romans, ancient technology, Alexander the Great.

my girlfriend likes, and I watch it too from a doctor Robert Sapolsky. Where he did a long term study on primates, and made some pretty fascinating behavior discoveries.

It's also entertaining.

If you start watching ancient aliens.... You get tied into a lot of the crap science. And I'm using the term science loosely. Where they will say,,,, " there's no other explanation except it has to be aliens."

I listen to old songs on YouTube, nothing else.

You know what is really scary? Is that this guy is considered a "Master" electrician in the state of Nevada. Un-real...

I would agree a lot of junk science is on the Internet and current over-unity schemes can't be shown to rest on any new principles of physics.

As a qualifier... up until 1998 it would have been thought impossible that the universe could be accelerating in its expansion. (And maybe, someday, someone will discover an overlooked flaw leading to this conclusion.) If we ever understand dark energy and dark matter, we may subsequently think, limitless, "free" energy, as an impossible idea, is old hat thinking... how did we ever think otherwise? After all, to my understanding, an increasingly expanding universe is the cosmic equivalent of over-unity, in the context of our hitherto understanding of Big Bang physics. And might entropy, as currently understood, someday be turned on its head, too? We just don't know enough to be ironclad in dismissing what seems impossible. For my lifetime, though, it will be impossible. (Unless we include alien technologies. )

As noted by others, I, too, find some good documentaries on YouTube.

I think I need to qualify my qualifier.

If the accelerating expansion of the universe is repeatable (maybe sinusoidal ?), we may just be on the far side of a peak. I know there doesn't seem to be enough matter for that model anymore (expand/collapse), but if Dark Energy is what gives rise to matter, how do we know there isn't an ebb and flow of Dark Energy such that Black Holes suddenly become White Holes, etc. The tables could be turned in favor of a collapse at some point. An acceleration of collapse is more common sense. But that is only due to perspective. A larger view of the conservation of energy.

If matter is, in fact, only an effect, we may never know its true nature. We think of energy as something we can detect. We do equate matter with energy, as we know it. (Actually, the concept of energy is an inherent precursor to the effects we can measure/detect -- heat, light, etc. So that (material) energy is detectable, while Dark Energy may not be. ... matter studying matter... (no, consciousness does). The investigation is like the eye trying to see itself without a mirror. Consciousness is the wildcard.
