Great Road Drives

10/03/2013 5:47 AM

I just came off the blog on bridges, which called to mind a drive I once did along the Feather River in California. Over the years, my brother and I have done several similar drives featured in "Motor Trend" magazine. My favorite is from Torrey to Escalante, Utah (before they straightened out a tight curve around 1990).

Let's hear about some other wonderful locations! I've also enjoyed western Canada, and would be glad to hear about all around the world. Start your engines!

any drive from the central coast of California heading north towards the Bay area is spectacular, then again driving through the deserts going from LA to Vegas once the first spring rains come if they come at all) yields a sea of life and color that sadly only lasts for a handful of days before the wind and heat bake everything and the short lived beauty of the desert in bloom rapidly withers away and the seeds of life seem to evaporate back into the sandy soil for several more years until conditions are just right again for an overnight explosion of color and growth. within a few short days the once bright carpet of life will revert back to a barren and foreboding wasteland almost void of life........it is still there, its just much more difficult to detect @70 MPH. because of this most travellers are deprived of the scenic beauty the dessert serves up every day

I agree. Highway 1 is hard to beat; I've spent a lot of time driving that road.

My friends and I used to go fishing at a spot in Big Sur...nobody else went there. It involved bringing about 300' of rope, tying it to the guard rail, and scooting down a very steep section of loose sand and rocks. The lingcod never saw us coming. We had to use 60 lb test, and pull them up a cliff face.

NC has some very nice drives too.

I agree except a slight correction, its Hwy 101, US 1 on the other hand is almost equally gorgeous on the east cost, especially going through the Keys

Okay, 101 it is.

I think I just called it 1, the entire time I lived there.

Maybe this is why.

Look at the coastal highway.

We're both right.

You need to get up north more often...

Just don't tell them where you're from.

I grew up in Huntington Beach. PCH from Seal Beach to Corona del Mar was the old stomping grounds

quote"I agree except a slight correction, its Hwy 101, US 1 on the other hand is almost equally gorgeous on the east cost, especially going through the Keys"

The reference was to highway 1 not US 1. Everyone knows that Highway 1 is the scenic and breathtaking one. US 101 is boring and inland. Highway 1 is a California highway, not a US highway. One of the secrets to great drives is to first get off the interstates and then get off the major highways next. What remains are usually great driving roads. We used to call them blue highways, due to the colors on most maps, but that has gotten screwed up with modern maps

I like 64 in North Carolina from Hendersonville (just south of Ashville) southwest to Murphy.

We like to stop along the way and enjoy a rafting trip down the Nantahala River. If it's springtime, better take 4 people to make sure at least one is still in the raft when you splash into the station.

Washington State Highway 20, also known as the North Cascades Highway. A nice ride anytime, but spectacular in the fall when the leaves are changing color.

Or any ride that includes a ride on the Washington State Ferry system.

Ok, this isn't exactly s road trip, as in a car. Northern Ca. Oregon and WA. mountains and forests are spectacular

My wife and I have taken the Coast Starlight twice from Ca. to Seattle and it is a great trip. Hundreds of miles forests, virtually untouched by humans, good food and service. It Takes two days and a night, so get a sleeping car.

The California coast and Puget Sound are spectacular. Northern Ca. Oregon and WA. mountains and forests are spectacular.

Worth the time and money.

Well,

The wife's son lives there and the Space Needle, dinner at the restaurant on top and fireworks displays over the lakes on the 4th of July were incentives, too. That was cool!

Off the beaten path, incredible drive. On interstate 24, in TN, in Monteagle, take HWY 56/41A South for 3 miles. Take a left (east) on HWY 156 (Jumpoff Road)

In about 5 miles, take a left (North) on Stagecoach Road.

You now have about 8 miles of AWESOME driving, It ends at hwy 2, right at I64. I've driven it pretty fast, turned around and drove it the other way, then drove it again. I get the chance about once a year, but don't pass it up if I am within an hour. Mostly very light traffic.

From Rapid City to Deadwood and Spearfish, Sturgis, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse is a good trip. Lots to see and do.

Been there more than once, too. Never during the Rally. Not that crazy!

One of my favorites is what we call the " North Shore Drive", http://www.superiorbyways.com/north-shore-scenic-drive/map/.

It is a 150 mile scenic drive on Hwy 61 from Duluth, MN to Canada along the north shore of Lake Superior. You'll see cliffs, beaches, incredible rock formations, waterfalls, lighthouses, tunnels, seaports and even the Sawtooth Mountains. Yes, mountains in Minnesota?!?! At some point back in time, the North Shore was pushed up from 200 to 500 feet above Lake Superior which creates a spectacular shoreline.

Another great drive is Hwy 61 in southeastern MN along the Bluffs of the Mississippi river.

If you didn't mention UT highway 12 in your post, I would have. So many people come for the big-name national parks and never get to that part (the middle) of the state. Utah has several other canyon/mountain roads that are a joy, typically closed for Winter. These are generally short drives.

The Island In the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park has a couple unbelievable driver's sections... with a 30-mph limit. :( And relatively light enforcement. :)

ID-34 north from Soda Springs to Afton, WY is wonderful.

And I must mention the Road to Hana on Maui.
