Engineers Find Better Way to Turn Sugar Into Biofuel

10/03/2013 6:59 AM

"UCLA chemical engineering researchers have created a new synthetic metabolic pathway for breaking down glucose that could lead to a 50 percent increase in the production of biofuels, according to a news release.

The new pathway is intended to replace the natural metabolic pathway known as glycolysis, a series of chemical reactions that nearly all organisms use to convert sugars into the molecular precursors that cells need. Glycolysis converts four of the six carbon atoms found in glucose into two-carbon molecules known acetyl-CoA, a precursor to biofuels like ethanol and butanol, as well as fatty acids, amino acids and pharmaceuticals. However, the two remaining glucose carbons are lost as carbon dioxide. Glycolysis is currently used in biorefinies to convert sugars derived from plant biomass into biofuels, but the loss of two carbon atoms for every six that are input is seen as a major gap in the efficiency of the process. The UCLA research team's synthetic glycolytic pathway converts all six glucose carbon atoms into three molecules of acetyl-CoA without losing any as carbon dioxide. "

...."The researchers also suggest this new pathway could be used in biofuel production using photosynthetic microbes."

So, we can create sugar out of thin air, and convert it 100% into ethanol.....

Does this air beginning to smell a little sour to you?

I claim Artistic license.... (CO2, water, sunlight, cyanobacteria culture...)

Isn't that photosynthesis followed by fermentation?

Yes,, yes it is....?

The sugar is created in a bio-reactor via proprietary cyanobacteria that utilize CO2, sunshine and water as feedstocks...the sugar(sucrose) is a by-product of respiration of the cyanobacteria....These bacteria are endosymbiotic in nature, and have a chloroplastic component...We have had a couple of breakthrough announcements lately in the improved efficiency of the fermentation to ethanol process...

Just what we needed...more patented life forms.

I guess I won't be able to do this at home.

The DNC is wondering if they can vote?

More good news!

Maybe we should stop messing around with ways to mix it with gasoline.

http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel_library/ethanol_drane.html

If we can get our production up, it would make more sense to have an alcohol pump at the stations.

We can raise the compression in engines again and improve performance....by taking advantage of the higher octane in ethanol and raising the HP per CC of engine displacement, an improvement in efficiency follows with improved mileage per gal...because of downsizing of engines...and weight...

..."Because of the compression limitation required to prevent "engine knock", a typical gasoline engine can only deliver about 25% efficiency - only 25% of the BTU's in a gallon of gasoline are converted to mechanical energy that turns the wheels of the car, the other 75% is lost in waste heat.

An Alcohol Engine can deliver about 40% efficiency - 40% of the BTU's in a gallon of ethanol powering an Alcohol Engine will produce mechanical energy that turns the wheels of the car."...

But if we can get pure alcohol to the pump, we can make one engine to run on it, and we can stop tinkering with gasoline engines to get them to burn increasing blends.

Better yet, we can commercialize and sell this new technology, eliminate the ATF and revenue agents from the mix, and we can all make our own fuel...a lot of us anyway.

If they ever put alcohol up at the fuel stations nobody will be able to drive anymore.

Could solve a lot of problems.

Don't put automatic Breathalyzers in the cars though, it might get to huge traffic jams at the fuel station with consecutive parties.

Jippy!

The report does not state where the 5 additional hydrogen atoms come from to make the third molecule of ethanol, nor what happens to about a third of the energy of formation of the sugar that is lost in producing three molecules of ethanol from it. That would be of interest, as would some idea as to what happens to the atom of oxygen left over by all this manipulation.

Well the hydrogen will probably come from nat gas, or possibly methane from organic decomposition(that stinkin dump)....
