About Material Characteristics

06/06/2007 1:36 AM

hai every body i want to fabricate one stuffing box & cylinder block. Customer wants ASTM A105 but that material is not available in market so i suggested to equivalent material ie. s50c, ST52-3, SSA1191 (ASTM A573, A633).So now i would like to know about material failure characteristics ie. vibration failure, corrosion resistance etc. anybody give idea to me.

tq,

subra

A. ASTM A 105 is a specification covers forged carbon steel piping components for ambient and higher temp. service in pressure systems. Included are flanges, fittings, valves, and similar parts. Forgings made to this specification are limited to a max. weight of 10 000 lb (4540 kg). Larger forgings may be ordered to specification A266. Tubesheets and hollow cylindrical forgings for pressure vessel shells are not included within the scope of this specifications. The weldability of that material is good.

B. Chemical requirements :

• Carbon 0.35 max., • Manganese 0.60-1.05, • Phosphorus 0.035 max.,

• Sulfur 0.040 max., • Silicon 0.10-0.35, • Copper 0.40 max.,

• Nickel 0.40 max., • Chromium 0.30 max., • Molybdenum 0.12 max.,

• Vanadium 0.05, • Columbium 0.02 max.,

C. Mechanical requirements:

• Tensile strength, min. : 70 000 PSI

• Yield strength, min. : 36 000 PSI

• Basic min. elongation for walls 5/16" and over in thickness, strip tests : 30

When standard round min. 2" gage length or smaller, elongation : 22

• Hardness, HB, max., : 187

So, if you have an equivalent material like ASTM A105, you can use it.

For material ASTM A216 (or ASME SA216), Steel castings, carbon, suitable for fusion welding for high temp. surface, there are a grades from that material such as : WCA, WCB and WCC. Every grade is considered a material with a different chemical analysis and mechanical properties.

Note. May be there are other materials with the same grades nominated as WCA or WCB, ... etc., that doesn't means that these grades are identical with the similar grades of other materials. So we have to deal with each grade related to the material it is belong.

I think you understand me.

Hi; I hate to say this but bottom line you have two options. 1. Go back and study what bulk modulous vs sheer is. OR 2. Ask your supplier to do the matth and let them take liability. It sounds as if it is important! If people could get hurt, then RUN AWAY FAST! Let the blame go to others!
