06/06/2007 3:24 AM

I am going to install new centrifugal dredge pump and I must make alignment. I would like to know the standard allowance in dial gauge readings.

Are you talking about the shaft alignment between pump and electric motor?

If so then I use 0.1mm.

Contact the manufacturer for the limits. One can't just make an arbitrary value without knowing the type of bearings and clearances of those bearings, etc. You must also take into consideration dynamic shaft position (where is the shaft when it's running if it is a journal bearing) and thermal growth (or cooling) versus the temperature when you align it versus the running temperature. This is if you want to do a precise alignment.

Lasers are typically utilised now to avoid the offset of dial gauge sag. Face and rim dial gauges (clocks) are 30 year technology. Reverse indicator dial gauges, to avoid sag inaccuracy, is 20 year old technology. Laser is 15 YO and now refined to be quite user friendly. If you do not totally understand alignment principals (dynamic and thermal offsets) hire an alignment contractor (there are thousands) and they will align the pump in 10% of the time you will take and it will be VERY accurate as they will use a modern laser and understand the science of alignment.

I teach classes on alignment, so I recommend you do it precisely.

What are the 'speed and the type of the coupling'?

If you are very new to alignment practice, you may please visit: www.yesyen.com > Downloads > GraphALine (free or paid). This should give fair idea. Should you need further clarifications, please feel free to contact me at: contact@yesyen.com.

I am a pump supplier. Use a pencil and your thumb, start it dry and run it in reverse, fry the seal and call your supplier in for warranty on a bad pump.

Dear supplier,

Did you ever meet my boss???

He is a real professional in this issues.... I think you copied this method from him!!!

Anyway you missed the part when the boss says "we will never buy again a single nail from this supplier". As well as the supplier is reluctant to sell to him again... :P
