Tank Internal Heating Coil - Is It Under API 650 or API 653 or ASME B31.3?

Dear All,

Please advise, heating coil for new tank (API 650) and modification tank (API 653) are under which code for design, inspection and testing?

I can tell you that they do not fall under ASME B31.3

In the red circle, the heavy line entering at the top says otherwise--that the piping does need to conform to ASME B31.3. (Which makes sense, by the way.)

Yes, ASME B31.3 application ends where the pipe enters the tank, as you can see. Inside the tank, you can see its a thin line, therefore out of scope.

I don't know which standard applies for internal heating coils. Do you?

It may depend on whether the coil is welded to the tank, versus entering and leaving independently. Jurisdictional conflict is typically silly, but that won't stop it.

Hi Torando,

Both nozzles of heating coil welded with shell plate and entering and leaving independently.

If we use, B 31.3 for design, inspection and testing, is there any problems?

But our designer also not specify this and we follow B31.3 for inspection and testing requirements.
