Welding of Weldolet - How Much Fillet Required?

10/10/2013 10:05 AM

Dear All.

Please advise for the below.

As per B31.3, for branch connection welding we follow below,

"328.5.4(d) Branch connections, including branch connection

fittings (see paras. 300.2 and 304.3.2), which abut the

outside of the run or which are inserted in an opening

in the run shall be attached by fully penetrated groove

welds. Thewelds shall be finished with cover filletwelds

having a throat dimension not less than tc. See

Fig. 328.5.4D sketches (1) and (2)"

Question: What about weldolet welding? Addition to full weld penetration at groove of weldolet,

do we need finish with cover fillet welds having a throat dimension not less than tc or

cover full groove of weldolet?

How to calculate Tb(nominal thickness of branch), is it weldolet thickness( sch, eg; 1.5" sch 80 (5.08mm)) at butt weld location or heavy thickness of weldolet bottom?

We want to weld weldolet 1.5" sch 80 in 6" run pipe.

No joy over the phone with the weldolet manufacturer, then?

Weldolets are "Branch Connection Fittings", therefore they require cover fillet welds.

The throat dimension of the cover fillet weld in your case would be the lesser of 1/4" or 0.7 x 0.200" = 0.14". A fillet weld leg size of 0.200" should meet this code requirement.
