Plasma Cutting

10/27/2013 12:11 PM

I have found when cutting 3/8" SA 517E plate, with a plasma. That when I cut with the grain of the plate I get a 1/8" beveld edge. Also when I cut against the grain of the plate, I can produce a square edge. Has anyone come across problems with plasma cutting against or with the grain of this abrasive plate?

I operated a C&C plasma cutter for about 6 months cutting up to 1.5 in plate steel.

If you are using a C&C, it could be the direction you are going and not the steel. Try rotating the steel and seeing if your kerf is better. If it is not you will need to diagnose what is wrong with the air shield and cutting gasses.

'...C&C...?

.

...um, what is a 'C&C' plasma cutter.

.

Did you mean 'CNC'? The 'N' in the middle of this TLA stands for 'numeric', not 'and', so the ampersand is not appropriate.

Sorry, I never wrote it down, should be CNC for Computer Numerical Control. Here are some images of CNC plasma cutters. They are computer controlled and will cut out a pattern drawn in cad software.

Drew is correct, torch travel direction makes a difference due to the 'spin' of the gas as it comes from the torch, once had this problem cutting circles and cured it by building a 'torch rotator' for cutting circles in 4' diameter 1" thick SS tubes.

I forgot to mention that it is also important to make sure your consumables are in good condition, the nozzles and electrode must be clean and not degraded.

Also, there is a small plastic ring that puts the shield gas into a spinning vortex. We had two for the big plasma cutter, one was for thick material and the other had small holes instead of a ring with channels. Make sure that it is clean and installed properly. We could flip ours to change the direction of the vortex, it would swap the drop side of the cut for cutting in reverse direction.
