95 Cavalier Interior Lights on Will Not Start

11/02/2013 9:12 AM

I have a 1995 cavalier a little over 100000 miles. Drove the car one night. Parked running fine. Next morning nothing when ignition key turned. Interior lights and radio all come on as well as the headlights. No dimming when key is turned. Replaced ignition switch and no change. Any suggestions. I have limited vehicle knowledge. Thanks

Trace the connection from the battery, through the ignition switch, to the starter motor....because you have lost continuity someplace....it could just be a loose connection, or a bad fuse....

you can search this forum on the right column of the page for "Cavalier" and find a ton of entries on starting issues. your particular car has a lockout feature that requires a reset. I assume you passed that up and went straight to the ign switch, try searching it out, its a specific sequence, it will probably do the trick, best of luck, you'll need a little

If the starter solenoid clicks when you turn the the ignition switch. Then you can eliminate the control circuit. Looking at the power circuit to the starter motor. Insuring that there is power to it. Doesn't click could be the fuse, the clutch/auto-transmission switch, keyswitch, the solenoid or loose wire along that route.

It might be a bad battery, corroded terminals, etc.

The best thing to do, is to spend the $15 on a repair manual, (I like Haynes), read it, and follow the troubleshooting procedures.

It's what I did 30+ years ago, and I've gone on to do all kinds of things, from complete engine rebuilds, to changing out entire ignition systems. It's a worthwhile exercise, and over time, you gain knowledge that you will never forget.

One of the solutions is to post a picture of the vehicle on an internet auction site (name withheld). After a few days, someone pays money to take the thing away. Problem solved.
