Poor Performance of Toyota Avensis Model Code AT221L-ALPEKW, Engine 7AFE, ATM

11/07/2013 3:43 AM

I have a Toyota Avensis with the above model and engine type. It also has electric fuel injection system.

About a week ago, I made a journey of about 218 kilometres from my home town to my place of work after spending the weekend with my family. The performance of the car was satisfactory without any sign of problem. After the day's job in the office, I started the car, engaged the drive to move, I observed very sluggish movement. Quickly I managed it to my mechanic about 500 meters from my office. New plugs were installed but the car could not rave. The mechanic advised that I should manage it home till the next day since it was getting dark. But before that I gauged the gear oil level and found out that it was less than the normal level and I quickly topped it up.

The next day, on engaging the reverse gear, I noticed that the car was moving in the forward direction instead of going backwards. A gear mechanic was called in and he diagnosed gear problem resulting from burnt fibre. I don't seem to believe him since the gear has not been dismantled.

Please can you advise me on the way out of this problem. If gear problem, do I need to replace it of work on the existing one?

One way out of the problem is to post the vehicle on an internet auction site (name withheld). After a few days, someone will show up with some money, swap it for the vehicle, and take it away.

Burnt fiber?

He may be saying that you need a new clutch assembly.

In the heading you list the vehicle having ATM automatic transmission. The say gear oil was added. First thing most mechanic do when there seems to be transmission problems is smell the oil. If the oil in and automatic transmission smells burnt. Usually the clutch packs are worn. But if you put gear lube in instead of ATF then it would smell burnt.

You also didn't say how much you correct the transmission's fluid level. Low level would cause the packs to slip your sluggishness.

If you corrected it with gear lube could be the the reason for the continued sluggishness and why it went forward in reverse. ATF is a 10 w oil. More a hydraulic fluid in an ATM then a lubricant though it does serve to lubricate. Gear lube is a 89 w oil pretty thick. Pump may have a problem pumping it and don't thing it will drain from the clutch packs very fast when they shift.

If that is the case you used gear lube have it drained and changed. If that don't correct the problem time to have the transmission rebuilt.

The engine would/does not rev and now the transmission is playing up?

It was working fine until you stopped and parked it after a long thrash for the day and then it played up.

Has it been raining there? Did you hit any pot holes at speed? Drive through any deep water?

The ECU controls the engine and the transmission, ask your mechanic to check the OBD for trouble codes and check all the electrical connectors to all the sensors on the engine and to the transmission and to the ECU(s). They could be partially disconnected or water has entered them. Check the vacuum plumbing while you're at it.

The transmission mechanic is basing his diagnosis (guess) on his experience with the symptom, ie a clutch is not pulling in or, if it is, it is slipping because it is burnt. That's how he made that diagnosis without opening up the box.

The only commonality I see is the ECU. If the transmission was toasted the engine should still rev.

Where you parked the car, are there any rats? Check for rodent damage (chewed wires). Very common problem here.
