Would Copra-Extracted Oil be Good Substitute for Petro-Diesel Fuel?

11/08/2013 8:04 AM

Most of Rural Philippines is planted to Coconuts. But the disparity in Copra Valuation (Farm Price @ P15/kg vs CopraMill Price @ 25/kg) due to high logistics cost, encourages Copra Milling at source. Given that, would Copra Milling (at source) make 100% Copra-extracted Oil an economical alternative to 100% Petro-Diesel - instead of the present blended 10%Coco+90%Petro, otherwise known as "Bio-Diesel"? In Rural Philippines, 100% PetroDiesel presently sells @ P48/ltr. If so, what Engine &/or Fuel modifications would need to be done - if at all necessary?

there's actually a huge amount of information on this topic that is readily available to non-lazy people that know how to utilize Google. basically coconuts are a poor source. I suspected and received confirmation that they have a low energy density, so yes they work but poorly. they require a refinement process that adds to overall cost(and uses up methanol) as well as requiring additional heaters to retain a working viscosity.

they also work best in higher compression ratio applications(which cost more from an initial investment aspect.

maybe you should be planting corn!

From this site:

http://www.thebioenergysite.com/articles/116/coconut-oil-as-diesel-fuel-vs-cocobiodiesel

"...Medium speed diesel engines can operate well on the use of straight and unprocessed vegetable oil such as coconut oil. Compared to the use of biodiesel, vegetable oils will considerably reduce fuel cost in such engine.

As vegetable oils have differences in carbon chain composition, each oil must necessarily be evaluated separately. In most cases, however, vegetable oil specially coconut oil have been proven to be very clean fuels with excellent combustion properties..."

Please note that it was written by the Executive Director of the Philippine Biodiesel Association.

Are not palm trees (that are non-coconut) a lot more productive with respect to oil than coconut? Also coconut charcoal is the best source of all for activated carbon that is known in water treatment for upstream water treatment (absorbing organics, removing chlorine, lead, etc.).

Yes, oil palm produces a great deal more oil than biodiesel.

Practically all activated carbon used in water treatment are made from coconut husks.
