I think TV is FM, for one thing.

they are different waves that have different travel properties. a tv wave only travels short distances amongst other things

There are so very many reasons why they must and could be different. First, the carrier frequency of these two transmissions must be different or they would interfere with each other. There is also the question of the signal power level and bandwidth that each must provide. Then there is also the obvious question of antenna interface, coaxial or wave guide. Not to mention all of the critical ancillary questions of impedance matching, available power, cooling, rack space, etc.

See #1 above.

One alters amplitude, one fiddles with frequency.

The effect that you describe happens in the modulator, which is a stage before the amplifier. The amplifier amplifies what it gets in amplitude.

The differences have to do with carrier's frequency and carrier's modulation type.

Commercial AM radio spans a spectrum of about 550 kHz to 1600 kHz and the audio signal is amplitude modulated (AM).

Television signals currently span between 54 mHz - 216 mHz for VHF channels, plus 470 mHz to 698 mHz for the UHF channels.

The analog TV data is frequency modulated (FM). The digital portion of the new TV broadcast uses a third type of modulation called 8VSB.

The final stages of both types (AM and FM) of transmitters are essentially the same (except for the bandpass traps to reduce unwanted frequencies (spurs)), but the modulation sections are very different.

Amplitude modulation simply uses a carrier frequency that is fixed in frequency, but the amplitude (power) fluctuates proportional to the audio signal's strength. It is very simple. For example, a 1 kHz tone would cause the transmitter output to oscillate in RF power 1,000 times per second. The magnitude of that oscillation imposed on the RF carrier can vary from 0% to 100% of transmitter power. 100% is equal to full volume, whereas 0% is dead silence..

Frequency modulation changes the transmitter's carrier frequency proportional to the audio signal's strength. You get higher quality audio and video since the carrier is always at 100% power.

8VSB is a form of amplitude modulation that has 8 discrete levels of amplitude that represent a binary digital code. Digital data is less prone to signal degradation, but modern digital TV resembles 1970s Chinese martial arts films, as the talk often does not match the video feed. This is probably due to the TV decoders in your TV.

The carrier frequency does not vary in amplitude. The sidebands vary in amplitude. that is where the intelligence (modulated data) is.

The upper and lower sidebands are made up of the intermediate frequency and the intelligence, positive amplitude and negative amplitude, relatively speaking.

The amplitude of the sidebands are determined by the amplitude of the intelligence.

A reduced or suppressed carrier system would not contain information if the carrier were where the data were located. That would be pointless.

The sidebands have the data.

Your question would make more sense if you had asked: What is the difference between AM and FM transmitter. The answer is different type of modulation - Amplitude and Frequency.

Problem with your question is that there are still TV transmitters operating in Band 1, 2 and 3 (VHF) that are also AM modulated. So in this spectrum, the answer is bandwidth.

For radio in AM, a separation between the carrier frequencies (how you recognize various station) is less than 20kHz (that is one of the reasons why AM is not HI FI)

For Television, more bandwidth is required to send - sync pulses + video information + audio signal + synch pulses for one channel.

TV transmitters work in higher frequencies than regular AM radio. A HERO made the bands clear {(only read Mhz (Mega) for mHz (mili)}

Your question: difference in Power Amp is also misleading.

The power amp in the transmitter is the part that pumps the power in the antenna circuit. When your power amp has enough bandwidth, theoretically it can be the same unit. However there is more: the antenna needs to be matched with the amplifier and we are talking about different types and sizes of antennas.

My KISS answer, the difference is the matching circuits and components to the antenna.

They're not, they just have different modulation, frequencies, and bandwidths. For the record, traditional analog TV signals use amplitude modulation for the picture and frequency modulation for the audio, both on the same carrier frequency.

Under most circumstances the final amplifier doesn't care what the underlying modulation technique is. The reverse isn't universally true though, receiver design was highly dependent upon the type of signal being received, until SDR (Software Defined Radio) was perfected.

AM voice communication is narrow band communication and TV signal has FM for audio about 100kHz maximum spread and AM narrow band for Video. TV signal can also be of digital type these days like broadband communication.

If you have a broadband power amplifier (PA) then it will work for both AM and FM as long as it is linear in AM and has larger flat FM capabilities. Amplifier will not know and will simply amplify the signal's power.
