Pipe Line Calibration

11/20/2013 7:52 AM

Can anybody help me getting these doubts cleared:-

(a)What is the international standards for "PIPE LINE CALIBRATION"

(b)What is International standards for preparing the Calibration charts for (a)

(c)can anybody help me in getting the above two things from any website.

Do you mean this?

Not a standard, but I would not be sure there is one.

Maybe check eso.org

What feature of the pipeline requires calibration, please?

Its a data pipeline I suppose. But what do I know!

There seems to be more than one thing in the pipeline!

Re: PIPE LINE CALIBRATION STANDARDS (LynDoor)

11/20/2013 8:22 AM

LynDoor™International Pipeline Calibration Standards

1. All pipe is to be made of a long hole, surrounded by metal or plastic centered around the hole.

2. All pipe is to be hollow throughout the entire length.

3. All pipe is to be of the very best quality, preferably tubular or pipular.

4. All acid-proof pipe is to be made of acid-proof metal.

5. The O.D. (outside diameter) of the pipe MUST EXCEED the I.D. (inside diameter) otherwise the hole will be on the outside of the pipe.

6. All pipe is to be supplied with nothing inside the hole so water, steam, or other stuff can be put inside the pipe at a later date.

7. All pipe is to be supplied without rust, as this can be more readily put on at the job site.

8. All pipe is to be free of any covering such as mud, tar, barnacles or any form of manure before putting up, otherwise it will make lumps under the paint.

9. All pipe over 500 feet in length must have the words "Long Pipe" clearly painted on each end so the fitter will know it is a long pipe.

10. Pipe over two miles long must also have "Long Pipe" painted in the middle so the fitter will not have to walk the entire length of the pipe to determine if it is a long pipe or not.

11. All pipes over six inches in diameter is to have the words "Large Pipe" painted on so the fitter will not use it for a small pipe.

12. All pipe closures are to be open on one end.

13. All pipe fittings are to be made of the same stuff as the pipe.

14. Pipe specified as "Straight Pipe" shall not have fittings within its length, otherwise it becomes "Crooked Pipe."

Did you forget to specify those 'serrations' on the outside surface of the pipe which mate with the serrations on the inside of the couplers, if the piping is not of the 'join-by-melting' type. Serrations shall also be tapered along the long axis of the pipe for a gradual binding effect between pipe and mating fitting; also of a proper depth for adequate connecting strength.

Would it not be helpful to write "LARGE PIPE" at intervals on the inside of large pipes so if one is crawling through a large pipe he/she will not mistakenly think they are crawling through a small pipe? -- JHF

That might unnecessarily complicate things, since one then would need to also write "top" and "bottom" inside the pipe to insure that the person inside does not try to climb along the top side of the pipe.

Dear Member,

In India major OIL COMPANIES are transporting the Petroleum Products through pipe lines for a distance ranging from 1km to 300km.The oil companies wants know the exact product inside the pipeline for which they are insisting for "PIPE LINE CALIBRATION"

An oil pipe line. Thanks for defining it.

The oil company needs to know the volume of product in the pipe line for stock accounting purposes.

What do the bean counters need +/- 1 litre or +/- 1m3..?

Get the drawings out and start calculating.

Is the pipeline in service, under construction or at the design phase?

The "PIPE LINES ARE IN SERVICE".

The MPE is 20ml for every 100 litre.

MPE means "MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE ERROR"

I wonder if opening/closing some valves would displace more fluid than the maximum permissible error; 20ml/100l (i.e., 0.02%) seems optimistic.

Re: Pipe Line Calibration

11/24/2013 11:32 PM

Thanks for defining MPE for me Tornado.

The limit of my fuel pipe line experience is the design and installation of in factory fuel delivery infrastructure. Nobody ever asked me to calculate how much fuel was sitting in the pipes.

If a client asked me to calculate it, I'd treat it the same as any other geometry problem and calculate the volume of what is effectively a contorted (some more than others) cylinder and use the centre line lengths for the different diameters yadda.. yadda.... ∏x(R12xL1+R22xL2+.....) Spread sheet would do it easily.

I too was thinking about how to determine the volume of the valves et al.. I have a feeling that this info is most likely searchable on the internet...

...but say it wasn't. You could perform 2 volume calculations. Firstly, where the valves are eliminated from the calculation completely, and secondly where the valves are considered to have the same volume as an unobstructed pipe segment of the same length.

The real volume will be somewhere in between. The OP can do the arithmetic.

Depending on the total valve body length to pipe length ratio this dither may well be within the quoted MPE, using the average volume of the two extremes the MPE would be half the dither (I think) especially for very long pipelines.....or not.

Rattle the numbers and see what comes out.

When you're not sure, check the boundary conditions and work inwards from there.

Re: Pipe Line Calibration

> exact product inside pipeline

1) Pipeline flow meter accuracy needs to be calibrated/verified in place, or in pipeline terminology, 'proved'. There are numerous firms that sell provers for petroleum flowmeters.

http://www.fmctechnologies.com/MeasurementSolutions/Technologies/LiquidSystems/ProverSystems.aspx

2) Siemens clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters can differentiate between successive products flowing in a pipeline when programmed for the sonic velocity signatures of the various products at various temperatures (and optionally pressure).

The measured variables relate to the products' density. Siemens calls the technique 'interface detection' and the process variables are API number and densities.

- - How does the pipeline operation prevent intermixing of products at the interfaces? I have always wondered how different products could use the same line without significant contaminations. Is there a portion of the interface discarded ?

I believe you need to look up results from this search:

https://www.google.com/search?q=pigging+and+pipe+line+caliper

You need to talk to the different companies to see if there is a standard.
