Connecting Power Supply (Earthed System) to Unearthed Consumer

12/02/2013 5:33 AM

What will be the impact of connecting power supply that is earthed to an installation that is not earthed? The unearthed installation uses a meter to detect leakage. This is a tug boat which uses its own power supply (a generator) when it is offshore- the generator neutral is not earthed. When it is onshore - we need to connect our power supply which is grounded. The idea is to provide only a three phase and a neutral - 4 wire to the boat without the earth wire.

Anybody who can help us before we connect our power supply as explained above?

Thank you in advance.

There are regulations for this sort of thing. British Standard 7671 is one of them.

My question is that - will this connection cause such things as circulation of current etc.

Not if it is carried out in accordance with local Regulations. That is why a local qualified Electrician can help as that individual will be up-to-speed with local Regulations.
