Mechanical Design of Transmission Line

Hi,

Mechanical parameters are also important in the design of transmission lines. What all are to be determined. I think the following are sufficient.

1. Max sag (at 75oC, and no wind? , or considering wt of ice, conductor and wind?)

2. Max tension (assuming suitable factor of safety of 2.5 (IEC))

3. Stretched and unstretched length of transmission line (eg for everyday temp and max temp of 75oC).

4. Sag and tension under erection conditions from worst weather conditions.

Any others to be determined?

Lyn is correct. Simply stating max sag isn't enough, you have to specify the operating conditions. Like everything else in electric power engineering, it's part of a system, and there are considerations that go beyond the electrical aspects.

There's max sag when the transmission line is being strung, when it's being operated under no, light, normal, and emergency loading conditions, under varying weather conditions, when crossing over highways, railway tracks, vegetation, different combinations of some or all of the above, and ultimately the point at which the line will have been stretched beyond its ability to return to normal when the overload is removed.

You pick the condition, there's a formula or a rule for it, and it's as much an art as it is a science.
