Whom should i contact regarding this.

Based on the information provided I would advise you get a job with companies that works with Reverse osmosis plants FIRST and gain as much real world knowledge, experience and contacts as you can while at the same time working on your small business plan and researching the industry, the market, the technology and new developments in your spare time. That and saving up money for the business start-up.

Like most industries you cannot just start up a small business without knowledge, experience, funding and a strong knowledge of your prospective customer base and expect it to be successful no matter how determined or how hard you work.

Taking a few extra courses directly relating to Reverse osmosis and small business development would also be strongly advised, and may make it easier to get that initial Reverse osmosis job to get your foot in the industry door (so to speak).

Get a degree in business.

Or search, "starting a small business".

Or, hire a business development consultant.

The resources available to you can vary considerably depending on whether your location is Kansas, Kosovo, or Karnataka.

.

Regardless, it would be wise of you to consider the sage advice already provided to work within the industry prior to attempting to compete. Consider it paid training.

Contacts is one thing....... Becoming a realiable source is another......

Resources you'll need:

1.) capital

2.) history of sucessful projects

3.) capital

4.) a network of quaity suppliers

5.) capital

6.) becoming a good solid and realiable resource for the industry. (See first 5)

7.) capital

8.) a sound business plan with industry needs and analysis

9.) capital

10.) sound business knowledge, practice and experience

Have you thought about working at a manufacturer first to gain actual practical knowledge of R.O. Systems and sources....... They can be quite a bit of difference from A book.

One other thing that you must do, is create an exit plan in you business plan/model.......... All good business plans have an exit plan contingency's.

You'll never get financing without it. And if you do, a fool is soon departed with his money.

When I looked into this years ago, I started with the Small Business Administration. They have retired businessmen to offer free advice. And I learned half of all startups fail in the first year, usually because they don't have enough capital. The minute you open the front door (real or metaphorical), money starts pouring out; inventory, payroll, rent, utilities, insurance, advertising, etc. And be prepared to run in the red for at least the first year. If you can start your business out of your home with no full time employees, that would give you a leg up. Or hit your rich uncle to join you in the venture.

As others have suggested, you will need to have excellent knowledge of the technology.

How is this entrepreneurial? The industry is really quite straight forward these days (plenty of competition, driving prices lower). Are you planning on bringing a new product to market, or use the technology in an alternative way? Either way, I would consult specialist engineering company (to develop the product/solution, based on your need).

The only other piece of advice I can offer is ... sucessful entrepreneurs are able to deal well with failure. Expect to fail many times before you get it right.

Good luck, hope it works out well for you.

Anthony

I echo the comments above, initially work for a company already established within the industry. It is immoral and in many cases illegal to to work for a company for a couple of years and then to set up your own venture in competition and try to poach their customers. You need to identify a hole in the market that is not being served by your employers or by their competitors. Using the same suppliers and even the same technology, provided it is not patented, is perfectly acceptable. Provided that it is not in your job spec. or employment contract, looking at your company's products and improving them for your own benefit is also acceptable.

You are an engineer, that probably means the you do not have in depth skills in marketing or business administration. Previous posts have suggested that you learn those skills but that will take a lot of time and you are keen to get started. An alternative is to set up with two or three partners each with an expertise that complements your own. This will also help with the capital in two ways. There are more of you to raise finance by contributing their own savings, and the banks or family members will be more willing to lend to a teams with a balance of skills than to an individual who is weak in some of the required areas. Partners with a financial stake are usually more willing to work the long hours, and forgo holidays etc. required for the first few years. Look around at company employees you know and work out how many of them are committed to seeing their company grow and prosper, and how many just do what is required (or less) to justify their pay check.

Consider your own skills and qualities. Do you have enough experience and knowledge in engineering and in RO for a salesman or an accountant to consider you as a potential partner.

Look closely at reply #4. The odd numbered points are key. If you have these as unlimited, you can make a go, and even if you do have, search the market first - see how much competition there really is out there, and I can gaurantee there is a lot, so you will need to have something really innovative (or really inexpensive) to get into the market. And, don't think any of your competition will just roll over and give up if you do manage to do this.

Took me 20 years to become an "entrepreneur" after graduating, mostly because of 1,3,5,7, and 9

1) Google "writing a business plan"

2) Follow directions found and write a business plan

3) Figure out if you have or can generate the capital required based on findings in your business plan, or, based on the competitiveness of the industry whether it's even feasible to attempt a new start-up in your target industry.

4) Good luck...
