The 14 Essential Qualities of an Executive – in 1922.

12/12/2013 9:43 AM

Professional Engineer Magazine recently referenced this 1922 chart "Essential Qualities of an Executive."

For starters, some of the words here definitely sound odd to us in 2013 - e.g. does anyone still use the word 'industry' to describe perseverance? Also, an exhaustive online search yielded not one definition for 'domination of will' but it sounds kind of scary. Maybe they meant 'persuasiveness'. But weird words notwithstanding, the importance of exhibiting the above listed qualities in the workplace still rings true - even 90+ years later. One thing that has changed since 1922 is that these qualities are now required of all professionals, not just executives.

It's fun to consider the list and reflect on how we think we stack up to it as individuals. For services companies and consultants, it's even more important to understand how your entire organization stands this test of quality. Whether you're a product design firm, law firm or a cleaning company, if your products are your people and the services they provide, then these qualities must always be evident individually and collectively. At IPS we continually hold ourselves to these standards in our behavior towards each other and towards everyone we encounter outside the company.

In 1922, the Professional Engineers were encouraged to 'Study this table for suggestions'. How do you and your company strive to maintain these "Essential Qualities"?

Yup that's right... intelligence isn't essential

Nor a good understanding of the fundamentals of the business you are in.

WALOOB!

1,2,3,4,8,9 & 14 are pretty good.

I don't see honesty in there either.

Wait. There it is under #2.

That's what delegating is for. Hey, a manager cannot be, do or know everything.

Yeah, but how does he know what to delegate to whom if he doesn't understand the product or the processes... Oh he's an accountant who is a member of your golf club and married to your big sis...? That's ok then...

What about political correctness? ...where a missed step can catapult you out the door with dumbfounding velocity....No 5 seems to be prejudicial against the handicapped...and 13 as well....

What about political correctness?

What political correctness, this was the 1920's so you know this chart was aimed at male executives only.

I remember finding an old grade school report card my grandfather had received. He had received a 'D' in health with an explanation penned in that simply read 'measles'.

.

It seems rather unfair, though on the upside I suppose they didn't ever have to worry about living with a grade less than 'D'.

Why? Perhaps he received the grade because he missed the final test because he had measles.

Some of these qualities are mutually exclusive. There are several conflicts, but one example is: a person cannot be expected to truly exemplify the characteristics of truthfulness, honesty, sincerity and competitiveness and at the same time truly exemplify unselfishness, kindness, cheerfulness and pleasing facial expressions.

.

There is an important distinction between actually embodying some of these characteristics and trying maintain the outward appearance of embodying these characteristics. Having this list as a model of what type off appearance to project, and in some ways merely publishing the list as an ideal, strikes me as particularly sociopathic.....so perhaps it isn't that misaligned with traits that may help an executive excel.

That's pretty close to a quote by Samuel Goldwyn..."The most important thing in acting is honesty. Once you learn to fake that, you're in."

Uh, fiction in 1922 is still fiction in 21st Century (wink, wink)!

Gordon Gekko summed it all up in three words: "GREED is GOOD."

There is a statement that says, "methods are many principles are few, methods may change, principles never do."

I think that is appropriate for the OP. The need for these characteristics is transcendant to the time factor. They deal primarily with what a person "is" and not what they "do". How a person functions, in whatever job they do, in management or elsewhere, is simply an expression of who they are as individuals. One can't separate a persons skill in a task from what their character is.

If the character is lacking, sooner or later it will come out in how their task is done.
