Resuming Windows Stuck

12/14/2013 9:29 AM

i have a system Dell tower Core 2 duel in office, last night it was working fine, it had two rams 1GB each, one of the ram stolen last night, now i am trying to boot it on one ram,

when i press start button, main screen comes asking to press F1 to continue, when i press F1 it goes on Resuming windows & stuck, i changed the memory slot for ram to place 1,

but the issue is same, i am running window Xp,

even i am unable to run it in safe mode.

Please help to resolve this issue.

Wait a minute.

Somebody went into your machine and stole 1 ram chip?

That's an odd story.

Even if you get windows to run, everything is so ram intensive, that you're going to get hung up on other applications.

XP should run on 1 Gb. I run windows 7 on 1 Gb. Did you try to put the ram in the other slot? Some motherboards have a preference slot.

Sorry. Just didn't read well enough. That option doesn't work.

2 new resolutions:

1. Make sure you have 2 slots filled up with the same type RAM. Your computer will work at the lowest speed of both, when different. When replacing RAM one of the rules is to get rid of your static electricity by touching the frame with the fingers that will take the ram print. I usually also make sure my hands are not too dry.

(small refreshment in the bath room)

2. perhaps the ram is bad now. When the thief was too electrostatic.

I opt for 1.

Only an "empty" XP can MAYBE run on one GB, you need a minimum of 2-4GB for XP nowadays.....

Also, its possible that the PC needs at least two memory PCBs to run......

The system could require both memory slots be filled, or you may have a bad ram module, or you may not have re-installed the single memory card correctly....

Agreed, that is what I thought as well.

Sounds like his/her best bet is to either try and reset the ram in BIOS during startup if you can or get a replacement ram module of the same size and speed. This may not be easy if the computer is old so you may end up having to buy two.

Ideally check the motherboard manual first for more details (you may be able to get a copy off the internet if you cannot find the one that came with the computer).

Maybe thief took something else as well? Or damaged something? Or wanted to prevent it booting so you would assume a fault and be distracted from act of theft.

I bet the thief took both your good DIMMs. He/she left a faulty DIMM in your machine hoping you would think your RAM just went bad.

Try to get into your BIOS (F9?). Run the memory test if available.

Some motherboard/CPU combos do require matched DIMM pairs to run. With only one DIMM, those systems will not normally do ANYTHING more than "beep" out an error code indicating a RAM problem.

Why weren't both RAM modules stolen?

Weird.

The incident details can tell you a lot. I assume that you verified that ram module IS gone and it's not that the motherboard just doesn't see it. (In that case an static electricity aware cleaning and reseating of ram modules could fix it). Was the box re-closed and re-connected? That alone means that this thief needed some time to blur things and get the benefit of a doubt. That must REEEEALY shrink the suspect circle. (People that WERE supposed to be around alone at the time of interest). Then you can pass the "interogation" recordings through lie detection software.(LOL). Anyway, XP boots fine on much less than 1Gig if you have enough swap (HDD) space, it just gets slower, so something else IS also wrong, possibly tweaked RAM related settings (like dual channel or ram timing) on BIOS. S.M.

There is very little on the net.

Short of a reinstall.

u sh'd chk u'r MB manual but if it can run from 1 module the inserting it may not always succeed (you shouldNOT use exessive force to mount it) + when you install your'AM u'r 'puter 'd B switched off and plugged off and you should statically equallize your potential to the PC case (check all loose connections near RAM slots)
if the problems presist the MB can be fixed in many cases ??? back in the factory or specialized work shops (if the price + bi-way shipping is worth the effort)
(sometimes some errors vanish by 'emselves if all capacitors on MB discharge - that may take months - has happened to me 2-ce in 20y so don't put much hope on it)

Issue resolved? You think?

How about you glaring security issue? Will you be welding the PC case shut and gluing the RAM modules in?

In the old days the Guru wrote a book about a processor (Z 80 Zilog) published it and made money.

A programmer payed money for the book to learn an make his money in his enterprise.

He found mistakes but never marked his book with a pen, when he confirmed an error / miss information bug he showed his son gave error and the correction verbally and acted like a little kid when doing so. My Dad.
