Surge Protection Device

12/20/2013 10:02 AM

we need to install a surge protection device on an electronic control card.the card has an input port supplied directly from transformer at 230vac single phase for sensing the mains voltage. but problem is that the supplier of the card gave us a 3phase type 3 SPD (model :PT 4-PE/S-230VAC/FM , make:pheonix contact) with Uc=355vac (L-N). and Uc=255vac (N-PE). can we use this 3 phase s.p.d for our single phase 230vac application.the stated Uc=355VAC seems too higher for our single phase application.

Why don't you get the correct device and do the installation properly.

If you ordered the incorrect part, the supplier will probably exchange it for the correct one.

If you don't have anybody on staff who knows the answer, then you should hire a knowledgeable electrician. (based on your historical record, this must be the case)

So far, you have been extremely lucky not to have killed anyone.

Uc - does that mean clamp voltage??

There has to be a good margin above normal voltage for a so-called surge suppressor to cover short term voltage rises without getting burnt out. 355 volts for 240 volts normal does not seem unusual to me. Usually, they are clamping "spikes" not attempting to be a voltage regulator.

This is insulation protection co ordination for indoor low voltage system. Pl.do take support from a field person.

I "googled" your part number. It came up immediately, fortunately. You could have written it was a Phoenix Contact product!

http://www.phoenixcontact.com/local_pdf/he_IL/PxC_-TT_-selection_for_POWER.PDF

They do not appear to make a two pole version - so if you wanted live and neutral protected, the 3 pole/3 phase version could be used.

It is a lightning protection device, commonly specified as 1.2 microsecond rise time and 50 microsecond fall.

There is no problem with this device for 230V two pole use, except two single pole devices might cost less and use less space.

The data sheet per web reference above indicates voltage is clamped to <= 1.5 kV.

If this electronic card is just sensing voltage it is probably OK with 1.5kV spike. If you do not think that is good enough, then a filter may be added.

You have not given the current consumption of the protected equipment, relevant to any further filter or spike suppressor, if needed.
