Trust me. If you have no idea where to begin, you will be better off buying one.

Do you have ANY idea what is involved in designing and building a piece of electronic hardware?

Actually this would be a great learning/hobby project. Lyn's link gives you a good starting point.

shlomia-

To do it yourself has a couple of problems with it. It is going to cost you 2 to 4 times more to build it than it is to buy it. Even then you don't know whether it is going to work and if you burn up a component that's all money down the drain especially if you buy a replacement component. That's not going to be inexpensive. Why not buy one and save the money to make something that you can use for experimentation or breadboard work in the future?

Another problem with making your own is the 120 volts feeding this thing or its power supply. 120v can be deadly, very deadly as in R.I.P. Just think of all the funeral expenses you will save your family!

Make a LM317 variable voltage regulator power supply. This can be used to power most of your semiconductor breadboards for experimentation. This will cost much less than your proposed project and you will have the money to buy the other components. What a savings! You get the money for the other projects too by not making the light dimmer! If you want to go with a higher current put a 2N3055 transistor in as a pass transistor and go up to 5 amps (Radio Shack about $3)

See how your expenses, time, and energy can be decreased and you now have the time and money to do other more exciting and educational things! Just think, you will be smarter by being smarter and not making the light control yourself!

Good Luck, Old Salt

Hi Shlomia!

Don't let those old fuddy-duddies scare you from having some fun.

1) That said, the warning about 120V circuits should be heeded. Consider accomplishing your dimming by running a standard dimmer knob with a stepper motor. To run the stepper motor...

2) Consider using a Raspberry Pi with a USB WiFi dongle - I use a $12 Tenda W311MA - works fine for short-range purposes. You'll learn Linux, how to run the GPIO port and all sorts of web server stuff. There are cheap geared-down stepper motors with ULN2003 driver boards on eBay. You could probably couple the motor and dimmer knob shafts directly to each other with a piece of tight-fitting rubber hose (makes a nice friction clutch in case the motor goes too far).

3) Consider learning about `Web Sockets' to turn `data sent' into `data received' and QT/Python to turn `data received' into 'motor turned'.

4) Document your progress - make it blog thing. You - and some future prospective employer - will be impressed by the variety of experience you'll have accumulated by doing this.

Yes, the total cost of doing it this way is now close to the $50 of buying the solution (like any dummy with money can do) - but then, it's not about the money - is it? :-) Good luck with this.

A stepper motor? That'll be tons-O-fun.

He may need more coaching and some diagrams.

What the heck, it's worth a try with some help.

Do a search on 'instructables.com' for wifi control projects, many have been built and published using various microcontroller platforms, complete with software and explanations.

437000 ISK (interstellar credits, Eve Online currency) for parts.

$500US upfront for consulting fees for the rest of the info.

Else, google and study arduino...

Here is a link to a heavy duty voltage controller design you will need.

http://quan-diy.com/projects/drillcont/drillspeedcont.htm

You will need to incorporate this with a Wi-Fi controlled ciruit to attain the results you are looking for.
